Newhall is the oldest and southernmost community in the city of Santa Clarita, California. It was the first permanent town in the Santa Clarita Valley. Before 1987, Newhall was an area not officially part of a city. Then, it joined with Canyon Country, Saugus, and Valencia to form the city of Santa Clarita.

Newhall's History
The Tataviam people had a village called Tochonanga where Newhall is today. Some villagers were brought to Mission San Fernando between 1797 and 1811. However, descendants of the Tataviam continued to live in the Newhall area.
Newhall was named after a businessman named Henry Mayo Newhall. It is home to the William S. Hart Regional Park. You can take tours of the famous silent movie maker's mansion there. Newhall also has the Pioneer Oil Refinery, which is a California Historical Landmark. It is the oldest oil refinery still standing in the world. It was also the first successful oil refinery in California.
Many movies have been filmed in Newhall over the years. These include Suddenly (1954) and Disney's The World's Greatest Athlete (1973). The TV series The Magnificent Seven was also mostly filmed in Newhall.
The Lyons Station Stagecoach Stop was once located near where Eternal Valley Cemetery is today. This is close to Newhall Avenue and Sierra Highway in east Newhall.
In 1970, an event happened that led to important changes in police training. It caused police departments across the country to focus more on officer safety. This event is known as the Newhall incident. It took place in what is now Valencia.
Education in Newhall
The Master's University is a Christian university located in Newhall.
For elementary schools, most of Newhall is served by the Newhall School District. A small part in the northeast is served by the Sulphur Springs School District. For middle and high schools, students attend Placerita and La Mesa Junior High Schools. They also go to Hart and Golden Valley High Schools. All these schools are part of the William S. Hart Union High School District.
Old Town Newhall
Old Town Newhall is a historic area, also known as Downtown Newhall. It is a main cultural and business center. You can find many unique restaurants, shops, and theaters there. There is also a public library. Many Mexican restaurants are in the areas around Old Town Newhall.
The Old Town Newhall Farmers Market is held at the public library. Other interesting places include the William S. Hart Park and the Newhall DMV. Newhall Elementary School is also in this area. You can also find the Newhall Metrolink station and the Veterans Historical Plaza. The First Presbyterian Church of Newhall and the Unity Center mosque are also here. The Newhall Community Center and the historic Saugus Train Station (Heritage Junction) are notable sites. The Walk of Western Stars is a popular attraction too. The official website calls Old Town Newhall "Santa Clarita's premier arts and entertainment district." A new wedding and event place called Hart and Main was planned to open in spring 2022.
