Newton Jasper Earp (October 7, 1837 – December 18, 1928) was an early American settler. He was born in Kentucky in 1837.

Newton was the oldest child of Nicholas Porter Earp and Abigail Storm. He was the half-brother of famous Old West lawmen like Wyatt, Virgil, and Morgan.

He fought in the Civil War for the Union army. He was part of the 4th Iowa Cavalry and left the army as a corporal in 1865. After the war, he moved to Missouri to farm near Lamar. He later ran for a local job called constable but did not win.

In 1871, Newton moved to Kansas. He became a farmer and a pioneer settler near Sterling. Later, he moved to Garden City, where he served as a marshal (a type of law officer). He also hunted buffalo in 1873. Newton lived in Wyoming and Nevada before settling in California. He was a member of a group called the Masons. Newton Earp passed away in 1928.

Early Life and Civil War Service

Newton was born in Ohio County, Kentucky. His parents were Nicholas Earp and Abigail Storm. Sadly, his mother died when he was only two years old. Newton was always very close to his half-brothers, James and Virgil.

In 1854, he married a woman named Jennie. Her last name is not known. She passed away before 1887. Newton once ran for the job of constable against his younger half-brother, Wyatt. Wyatt won the election.

When the Civil War began, Newton joined the Union Army in 1861. His brothers James and Virgil also joined. James was hurt early in the war and went home. But Newton and Virgil served for the entire war.

Newton Earp was part of the Fourth Cavalry, Iowa Volunteers. He was promoted to fourth sergeant on January 1, 1865. He officially left the army on June 26, 1865, in Louisville, Kentucky.

Life After the Civil War

After the Civil War, Newton married Nancy Jane "Jennie" Adam. They got married in Marion County, Missouri, on September 12, 1865. The couple then moved to San Bernardino, California. Most of his family had already moved there. In California, Newton worked as a manager at a saloon.

In 1868, Newton and his family moved back to the Midwest. They first settled in Lamar, Missouri, where Newton became a farmer. Later, they moved to Kansas. Newton and Jennie had five children: Effie May, Wyatt Clyde, Mary Elizabeth, Alice Abigail, and Virgil Edwin. They named their first son, born in 1872, after his famous uncle, Wyatt. Their second son, born in 1880, was named after his uncle, Virgil.

Later Years and Passing

Newton Earp moved to California again later in his life. He became a carpenter, building houses in northern California and northwestern Nevada. His first wife, Jennie, died on March 29, 1898, in Paradise Hill, Nevada. This area is also known as Paradise Valley.

Newton passed away at the age of 91 in Sacramento, California, on December 18, 1928. Only his brother Wyatt lived longer than him. Wyatt died about a month later, on January 13, 1929. Newton Earp is buried in Sacramento's East Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
