Nicholas Michael Leddy (born March 20, 1991) is an American professional ice hockey player. He plays as a defenseman for the San Jose Sharks in the National Hockey League (NHL).
Nick was chosen in the first round of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft by the Minnesota Wild. He has also played for the Chicago Blackhawks, New York Islanders, Detroit Red Wings, and St. Louis Blues. In 2013, he won the Stanley Cup with the Blackhawks.
Nick Leddy's Hockey Journey
Early Years and Draft Day
Nick Leddy showed great skill in high school hockey. During his junior year at Eden Prairie High School, he scored 5 goals and made 22 assists. This helped him earn special honors in Minnesota.
Instead of joining a national team program, Nick decided to finish high school with his teammates. In his senior year (2008–09), he had an amazing season. He scored 12 goals and made 33 assists, totaling 45 points. This earned him the "Minnesota Mr. Hockey" award. His team also won the state championship that year.
After high school, Nick went to the University of Minnesota for the 2009–10 season. He scored a power-play goal in his very first college game. However, he broke his jaw in October 2009, which made him miss eight games. When he returned, he quickly started scoring and assisting again. He was even named "Rookie of the Week" after a great game where he scored the winning goal.
Nick was drafted by the Minnesota Wild in 2009 as the 16th overall pick. But on February 12, 2010, his draft rights were traded to the Chicago Blackhawks.
Playing in the NHL
Time with the Chicago Blackhawks (2010–2014)

In July 2010, Nick Leddy signed a three-year contract with the Chicago Blackhawks. He decided to become a professional player after just one year of college hockey. The Blackhawks' general manager, Stan Bowman, was very impressed with Nick's smooth skating.
Nick played his first NHL game on October 7, 2010. Just four days later, he scored his first NHL goal against the Buffalo Sabres. In his first season (2010–11), he played 46 games, scoring 4 goals and making 3 assists. He also made his Stanley Cup playoff debut that year.
In the 2011–12 season, Nick played in all 82 games. He scored 3 goals and had 34 assists. He also scored his first career playoff goal in 2012 against the Phoenix Coyotes.
The 2012–13 season was shorter due to a lockout. Nick played in all 48 games, scoring 6 goals and making 12 assists. This season was special because he helped the Blackhawks win the Stanley Cup in 2013! They beat the Boston Bruins in six games in the 2013 Stanley Cup Finals.
Nick signed a new two-year contract with the Blackhawks in July 2013. He continued to play in every game during the 2013–14 season. He scored 7 goals and had 24 assists. In the 2014 playoffs, the Blackhawks made another deep run. They reached the Western Conference Finals but lost to the Los Angeles Kings.
Moving to the New York Islanders (2014–2021)
On October 4, 2014, Nick Leddy was traded to the New York Islanders. This happened just before the 2014–15 season began. In February 2015, he signed a big seven-year contract with the Islanders.
On October 25, 2019, Nick scored two goals in a game against the Ottawa Senators. One of these goals was a penalty shot, which was a first for an Islanders defenseman!
Playing for the Detroit Red Wings (2021–2022)
After the 2020–21 season, Nick was traded again. He joined the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for another player and a draft pick.
Joining the St. Louis Blues (2022–2025)
On March 21, 2022, Nick Leddy was traded to the St. Louis Blues. He signed a four-year contract extension with the Blues in July.

On March 23, 2024, Nick played his 1,000th NHL game. This was a special milestone for him. It was against the Minnesota Wild, the team that first drafted him.
Current Team: San Jose Sharks (2025–present)
On July 2, 2025, the Blues placed Nick Leddy on waivers. The very next day, the San Jose Sharks claimed him. This means he is now a player for the Sharks.
