Nickelodeon Philippines is a special TV channel in the Philippines. It is a pay television channel, which means you usually need to subscribe to watch it. It started on April 1, 2011. This channel is like a local version of the famous American channel, Nickelodeon. It shows programs for kids and teenagers.

ViacomCBS Networks EMEAA and All Youth Channels work together to own Nickelodeon Philippines. When it first launched, it took the place of the older Nickelodeon channel that used to be seen across Southeast Asia. That older channel had been available in the Philippines since 1998.

In 2006, a part of Viacom called MTV Networks Asia Pacific started a new group. This group was created to manage Nickelodeon's operations in Southeast Asia. Then, on April 1, 2011, MTV Networks officially launched the special Nickelodeon channel just for the Philippines.

Nickelodeon Philippines Kids' Choice Awards

The Philippines Kids' Choice Awards was a big event for kids in the Philippines. It was the second Kids' Choice Awards show held in Asia, after Indonesia. The first show happened in 2008 at the Aliw Theater in Pasay. A famous Filipino artist named Michael V. was the first host.

Nickelodeon, an American TV network, brought the Kids' Choice Awards to the Philippines. They wanted to become more popular in Asia. Amit Jain, a top executive from MTV Networks, said this was a big step. He explained that it would help Nickelodeon offer global shows that also fit local tastes. The Philippines KCA has not been held for many years. However, it was later brought back as a special category representing the Philippines in bigger awards shows.

Nickelodeon Shows on Free TV

Before the Nickelodeon Philippines channel started in 1998, Nickelodeon shows were already on TV in the country. They first aired as a block on the free government TV channel PTV until 1992. This block showed mostly drama, educational, and game programs in the mornings and afternoons.

Later, Nickelodeon shows moved to New Vision 9 until 1998. They also aired on RPN 9 again from 2003 to 2006. During this time, GMA Network also bought the rights to show Rugrats and some Nick Jr. shows. These aired from 1998 to 2006.

In May 2006, RPN and GMA lost the rights to air Nickelodeon shows. ABC then started showing them. On August 11, 2008, Nickelodeon shows were dubbed into Filipino for the first time. Go, Diego, Go! was an exception and was not dubbed. This made ABC the first national network to dub these shows.

ABC later changed its name to TV5. Their contract with Nickelodeon ended on June 30, 2010. This happened after PLDT's MediaQuest Holdings bought TV5. This change led to a big reshuffle in TV5's programs. Yo Gabba Gabba! was the only Nickelodeon show kept by TV5. Even though it was a Nick program, it was not dubbed into Filipino because the contract had ended. SpongeBob SquarePants also aired on Q (a channel linked to GMA Network). It was shown every weekday morning until February 18, 2011. Q then stopped broadcasting to become GMA News TV, a news channel.

In 2010, ABS-CBN got the rights to air Nickelodeon shows. They launched a block called Nick Time on July 26, 2010. It was later renamed Nickelodeon on ABS-CBN. This block aired every weekday morning. Shows like Dora the Explorer, SpongeBob SquarePants, The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron, and Avatar: The Last Airbender were shown. They continued the Filipino dubbing that TV5 had started.

However, some people criticized ABS-CBN's airing of Nickelodeon shows. They said many episodes were edited because of time limits. There were also many commercials, and ABS-CBN seemed to prioritize movies and sports. Studio 23 (another channel linked to ABS-CBN) also launched Nickelodeon on Studio 23 on October 4, 2010. Like ABS-CBN, their programs were dubbed in Tagalog. Studio 23 aired Catscratch, which started in August 2011.

Three years later, the Nickelodeon on Studio 23 block ended on January 16, 2014. This was because the channel was relaunched as ABS-CBN Sports+Action (S+A), a channel focused on sports. To make the change smooth, Nickelodeon shows moved to ABS-CBN Sports+Action's Action Kids block on January 20, 2014. All the programs went back to their original English language instead of being dubbed in Filipino. This block was canceled in early January 2015. This happened when ABS-CBN launched its digital black box. Nickelodeon last aired on ABS-CBN on May 3, 2020. This was two days before the National Telecommunications Commission stopped ABS-CBN from broadcasting. This temporarily halted ABS-CBN and S+A's free-to-air activities.

On Yey!, a digital channel of ABS-CBN TV Plus, Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. shows aired. This was part of the Nickelodeon sa Yey! block every morning from Mondays to Sundays until 2020. All programs were dubbed in Filipino, except for some shows like Peppa Pig. In 2017, Yey! showed The Loud House and Harvey Beaks for the first time. In the next few years, they also aired The Fairly OddParents and The Mighty B!. The Yey! channel stopped broadcasting permanently on June 30, 2020. This was due to an order from the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC).

Nickelodeon Programming

Nickelodeon Philippines usually airs new shows and episodes a few months after they first appear in the US. Sometimes it can take up to a year. The shows on Nickelodeon Philippines are different from the Nick-Asia channel. For example, live-action shows are aired twice in the afternoon and evening. Also, the Nick Jr. block runs for a longer time.

When the dedicated channel was announced, several new shows were planned to premiere. These included Bubble Guppies, House of Anubis, The Fresh Beat Band, Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness, and T.U.F.F. Puppy. Many original Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. shows are still shown on the channel.

Programming Blocks

Nickelodeon Philippines often organizes its shows into special blocks.

  • Nick Jr. on Nickelodeon is a block for younger children. It airs programs for preschoolers. You can watch it Mondays to Fridays from 8 AM to 12:55 PM, and on weekends from 8 AM to 11 AM. Nick Jr. also has its own channel in the Philippines. It is available on Sky Cable Channel 103, G Sat Channel 22, and Cignal Channel 77.

Past Programming Blocks

  • TEENick was a block that showed live-action programs for teenagers. This block no longer exists on the channel. TeenNick shows are now aired along with other Nickelodeon programs.
  • Weekend Express was a block that ran every weekend at noon. It showed programs based on a different theme each week. This block ended on June 26, 2011.
  • Lunch Toons was a special block that only ran for a limited time. It showed one random Nicktoon that was themed around a certain food.
  • Hapon Hangout was a block in the afternoon that started in February 2013. It mostly aired cartoons and live-action shows. This block ended in December 2017.
  • G Time aired from 4 PM to 6 PM on weekdays and weekends. It was a block that showed both animated and live-action series.
  • Flick Picks was a block that aired movies on Fridays and Sundays at 6 PM.

Short Segments

  • Nick Tunes was a short segment that played songs from Nicktoon shows. These songs appeared during commercial breaks. The segment took a break from late 2011 to April 2, 2012. Nick Tunes included songs from shows like SpongeBob SquarePants, The Fairly OddParents, and Back at the Barnyard.
