Nickelodeon was a popular TV channel for children and teens in Russia and other nearby countries. It started broadcasting on November 15, 1998. The channel showed many well-known cartoons and live-action shows.

One cool thing about Nickelodeon was that it was the first kids' channel in the region to broadcast in super clear High Definition (HD) starting on October 4, 2011!

History

Early Days (1993–1998)

Before the Russian Nickelodeon channel began, kids in some parts of Russia could watch Nickelodeon from the United Kingdom. This version of the channel broadcast for a few hours each day.

Russian Launch (1998–2022)

On November 15, 1998, Nickelodeon Russia officially started broadcasting. This was a big step because the channel began to broadcast 24 hours a day. It offered shows in both Russian and English languages.

The channel worked hard to make sure all the shows were dubbed into Russian right in Moscow. Initially, recordings were sent to Moscow, dubbed, and then sent back to London for broadcasting.

Soon after its launch, Nickelodeon Russia introduced special blocks of shows. These included "Nicktoons" for animated series, "Nick at Nite" for older shows, and "Nick Jr." for younger children. By June 1999, about 30,000 homes were already watching the channel.

In 2001, the channel launched its official website, Nickelodeon.ru. This gave kids a fun place to play games and learn more about their favorite shows online.

Over the years, the channel changed and grew. In May 2004, it became part of Nickelodeon Europe, broadcasting across Eastern Europe. A Hungarian language option was also added.

On March 1, 2010, Nickelodeon introduced a new look and logo. In 2011, the channel switched to widescreen broadcasting (16:9), which made shows look better on modern TVs. Later that year, it started broadcasting in HD quality.

In October 2012, the Russian version of Nickelodeon became separate again from the Polish version. It started to have its own unique schedule of programs.

In 2013, new show blocks appeared, like "Family Friday" and "Old School." These blocks featured classic cartoons that many parents might have watched when they were kids.

From January 1, 2015, the channel stopped showing advertisements. In the summer of 2015, the channel's website was updated, and it became very popular, with over 650,000 unique visitors in just three months!

In 2017, the programming for the TV channel began to be managed from Moscow. Also, new audio options in Lithuanian, Latvian, and Estonian were added for viewers in the Baltic countries. From June 1, 2017, the channel started using the shorter name "Nick."

In 2020 and 2021, Nickelodeon content also became available on online streaming services like Okko and ivi in Russia.

On April 28, 2022, Nickelodeon stopped broadcasting in Russia. This was due to international events. The channel continued to broadcast in other nearby countries until December 14, 2022. On that day, Nickelodeon and its related channels also stopped broadcasting in Belarus and other CIS countries. They were replaced by another version of Nickelodeon called Nickelodeon CEE.

Censorship

Some episodes of shows like The Loud House were removed from broadcasting. This happened because of local rules in Russia about what kind of content could be shown on television.
