Nickelodeon Global (which used to be called Nickelodeon Europe) is a super cool TV channel made just for kids and teens! It's the international version of the famous American Nickelodeon channel. This channel is run by different companies depending on where you live. In Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia, it's managed by Paramount Networks EMEAA. If you're in Latin America or Brazil, it's looked after by Paramount Networks Americas.

Channel History

How Nickelodeon Started in Europe

Did you know that the American Nickelodeon channel started showing up in many European countries way back in the late 1980s? In 1988, it even reached the USSR without needing any translation! This happened because MTV Networks Europe wanted to expand, just like they did with MTV Europe in 1987.

To play it safe, the company that owned Nickelodeon, Viacom (now Paramount), decided not to launch a completely separate Nickelodeon channel for Europe right away. Instead, on September 1, 1993, Nickelodeon UK was launched in partnership with BSkyB (now Sky UK). This UK version then started to be shown in other parts of Europe.

Nickelodeon Global's Journey

The Nickelodeon channel you know today, which covers many European countries, officially started on November 15, 1998. Back then, it was called Nickelodeon Europe and broadcasted shows all day and night!

Between 1998 and 2000, Nickelodeon Europe became available in countries like Malta, Romania, and Hungary.

In the early 2000s, the channel added some fun programming blocks. These included Nick Movies, Toons on Toast, Nick Zone, and Nick Double.

In 2004, the channel grew even more, reaching parts of Eastern Europe and broadcasting in Russian. From May 2004 to September 2012, Nickelodeon Europe was the main channel for many countries in the CIS and the Baltic countries.

From 2008 to 2012, the channel sometimes had technical issues. For a while, some cartoons even played in English only! During this time, some of the on-screen promotions were also removed.

On Valentine's Day in 2010, Nickelodeon introduced a brand new logo that matched the new look of Nickelodeon channels around the world. In the same year, the TV channel started broadcasting under a Czech license. This was because the Czech Republic had simpler rules for broadcasting in the EU. Even so, the main broadcasting center stayed in London.

Between 2010 and 2013, Nickelodeon Europe expanded to more countries. These included the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Croatia, Slovenia, Bulgaria, and Serbia.

On September 17, 2011, Nickelodeon switched to widescreen broadcasting (16:9), which means shows filled more of your TV screen. Then, on October 4, 2011, Nickelodeon Europe upgraded to HD format for an even clearer picture! In some countries, like the CIS, it was even called Nickelodeon HD.

In 2013, the programming for the TV channel started to be managed from Amsterdam.

In October 2017, new audio options were added for the Baltic States, including Lithuanian, Latvian, and Estonian languages.

On August 31, 2021, Nickelodeon Europe changed its name to Nickelodeon Global. This new name showed that the channel could now reach 85 countries worldwide! Nickelodeon Global kept its Czech license to make sure it could continue broadcasting legally in the European Union, even after the UK left the EU.

On April 5, 2022, a Kazakh-language audio option was added for viewers in Kazakhstan.

Starting in December 2022, Nickelodeon Global became the main TV channel again for most CIS countries (except Russia and Belarus). It replaced the local version, Nickelodeon Russia.

On June 1, 2023, a Ukrainian-language audio option was added. This replaced the Nickelodeon Ukraine channel that was on Pluto TV.

Finally, on August 1, 2023, Nickelodeon Global got a fresh new look! This included an updated version of its logo and a brand new design for everything on the channel.
