Niederdorf is a small town, also called a municipality, in Switzerland. It is located in the Waldenburg district within the canton of Basel-Landschaft.
Contents
History
Niederdorf has a long history. It was first mentioned in old writings between 1345 and 1389. Back then, it was called Onoltzwil in dem [...] nidern dorff. Later, in 1453, it was known as Niderndorff.
Niederdorf used to be part of a larger village called Onoldswil. This village also included Oberdorf. However, Onoldswil was split up in the 13th century, and Niederdorf became its own place.
Geography
Niederdorf covers an area of about 4.41 square kilometers (1.7 square miles). A large part of this land, about 58.3%, is used for farming. Forests cover another 26.5% of the area.
About 15% of Niederdorf's land is built up with buildings and roads. A very small part, about 0.2%, includes rivers or lakes. The rest is land that cannot be used for farming or building.
The town is located in the Waldenburg district. It sits in the Waldenburger and Vorderen Frenken valleys. An old road that goes over the Oberen Hauenstein Pass runs through the area.
Niederdorf includes the main village and 14 smaller farming settlements. These settlements grew up in the 19th century. There is also a farm called Arxhof, which was started in 1585. The canton bought this farm in 1960.

The official coat of arms for Niederdorf is quite simple. It shows a key on a shield. The shield is split diagonally into two colors: silver and red. The key itself is also split, so its colors match the opposite side of the shield.

Niederdorf has a population of about 1,778 people as of December 2005. Most people in Niederdorf speak German. About 84.8% of the population speaks German.
Other languages spoken include Italian language (about 5.4%) and Serbo-Croatian (about 3.2%). A small number of people also speak French or Romansh.

Niederdorf has good public transport connections. It is served by the Waldenburg railway, which is a narrow-gauge railway. Trains run every 15 minutes to Liestal.
From Liestal, you can connect to the main Swiss Federal Railway network. This allows you to travel to larger cities like Basel, Bern, Lucerne, and Zürich.
