Niederried bei Kallnach was a small town, also called a municipality, in the Seeland area of the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

To the southeast of the town, you can find the Niederried reservoir. This reservoir is a very important place for many types of water birds and wading birds from all over the world.

Niederried bei Kallnach joined with the town of Kallnach on January 1, 2013. So, it is no longer a separate municipality.

History of Niederried bei Kallnach

People have lived in Niederried for a very long time! Scientists have found old neolithic (New Stone Age) and Hallstatt (Iron Age) burial mounds here. These mounds are like ancient graves, and some even contained special items buried with the people.

During the Middle Ages, Niederried and Kallnach were part of the same local court system. This means they shared how justice was handled. In the early 1500s, this court system became part of the Landvogtei of Aarberg. By 1530, the two villages, Niederried and Kallnach, were combined into one church area, called a parish.

Niederried has always been a small village focused on farming. Around 1910, the number of people living there actually doubled! This happened because new power plants were being built in nearby areas like Kallnach and Aarberg. Also, the Niederried dam and the Niederried reservoir were created. Building the reservoir caused some fields in the village to be flooded, which changed the town's boundaries.

In 1974, a primary school was built right in Niederried. However, older students from Niederried still go to school in Kallnach for their upper primary and secondary education.
