North Dandalup is a small town located in the Peel region of Western Australia. You can find it along the South Western Highway, nestled between the towns of Serpentine and Pinjarra. The local area is managed by the Shire of Murray. In 2011, about 346 people lived in North Dandalup.
A Look Back in Time
The name "Dandalup" comes from the Noongar people, who are the traditional owners of this land. It's linked to the rivers in the area and has been on maps since 1835. The exact meaning of the name isn't fully clear today.
In 1894, a railway line was built connecting Pinjarra to Picton Junction and then to Perth. North Dandalup became a stopping place on this important railway route.
A company called Whittaker's had a timber railway that ran from North Dandalup into the Darling Ranges. They had permission to cut timber from a huge area of land, about 36,000 acres (146 square kilometers).
The town grew over time.
- Land for a school was set aside in 1899.
- The school officially opened its doors in April 1900.
- A town hall and a recreation ground were built in 1915, giving the community places to gather and play.
North Dandalup was officially recognized as a town in 1972. This was a year after work began on building the nearby South Dandalup Dam. Later, on October 28, 1994, the North Dandalup Dam was opened. This large dam, costing $50 million, is located about 6 kilometers from the town.
North Dandalup Today
Today, North Dandalup is a quiet community. It has a primary school where local kids learn. There's also a town hall, a convenience store, and a fuel station for residents and travelers.
The nearby North Dandalup Dam is a great spot for fun activities. People can enjoy the outdoors and relax by the water. The town is also close to the North Dandalup Important Bird Area, which is a special place for birds.
A new housing area called Dandalup Springs is being built. This development will bring more homes to the town. The first stage will have 122 lots, and another 100 lots are planned for the second stage. This growth is expected to more than double the population of North Dandalup.
Getting Around
North Dandalup is located right on the South Western Highway. This highway is a main road for people traveling through the region. If you're coming from Perth and want to go to Dwellingup, Western Australia, you'll turn off the highway onto Del Park Road right in North Dandalup.
The town is also a stopping point for the Australind passenger train. This train travels between Perth and Bunbury, making it easy for people to visit or travel from North Dandalup.
