Discovering North Hykeham's Past
North Hykeham was once spelled "North Hyckham." People often call it simply 'Hykeham'. Even though it's very close to Lincoln, it is its own separate town.
Early Settlements and Names
The old village of North Hykeham has a long history. It dates back to the Angles. These were Germanic people who came to Britain around 400 AD after the Romans left. Later, the Danes and Vikings arrived in Lincolnshire around 900 AD. Many place names ending in –by, –thorpe, and –ham (which means 'village') come from them.
North Hykeham in the Domesday Book
The Domesday Book was a very important survey from 1086. It recorded that North Hykeham had 15 households. It also had a 52-acre meadow. The main landowner at that time was Baldwin of Flanders.
Windmills and Churches
The town's crest shows windmills. This is because two old windmills once stood here. Each mill was owned by one of the town's two main estates. One mill was made of brick and was part of 'Ladds Mill'. It was located on what is now called Mill Lane.
The first church in North Hykeham was mentioned in 1160. But by 1700, it was a ruin. For many years, North Hykeham had no church. All Saints Church was built on a new site in 1868. It cost £1200 to build. A Methodist Chapel was also built in 1881.
Town Council and Community Buildings
In 1894, the first Parish Council was formed. It met in the village school. In 1948, the council moved to the Memorial Hall. The current Memorial Hall was built in 1969. In 2006, the Town Council moved to its new offices on Fen Lane.
