- 2002: North Lakes State College first opened its doors on January 1.
- 2005: The Lakes College also began teaching students on January 24.
- 2006: North Lakes used to be part of Mango Hill. But in February 2006, it became its own separate suburb. The name "North Lakes" comes from the name of the housing development built here.
- 2007: Construction started on the North Lakes Business Park. This was a huge project that took over ten years to finish.
- 2009: Bounty Boulevard State School welcomed its first students on January 1.
- 2014: The North Lakes Library opened, giving the community a great place to read and learn. Also, the Plantation Road Bridge opened on December 12, making it easier to travel to Dakabin.
- 2019: The North Lakes Golf Club closed on August 11. The land was sold to build a retirement village. Many local people were sad about this, as they enjoyed the green space the golf course provided.

The suburb is home to Westfield North Lakes, a huge shopping center. Inside, you'll find popular stores like Target, Coles, Big W, Woolworths, Myer, and Kmart. There are also many other shops and a cinema complex that opened in 2016.
North Lakes is also special because it has Queensland's second IKEA superstore, which opened in 2016. Plus, it's the site of Queensland's very first Costco store!
