The Northeast Corner Conference in Indiana

The Northeast Corner Conference (NECC) is a group of twelve high schools in Northeast Indiana. These schools are part of the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA). The conference helps schools compete in different sports. You can find these schools in counties like DeKalb, Elkhart, LaGrange, Noble, Steuben, and Whitley.

How the Conference Started

The conference began in 1964. It was first called the Bi-County Conference. At that time, new schools like Lakeland and Prairie Heights were formed. This meant there were only seven schools left in Lagrange and Steuben Counties.

Angola was already in another conference. Lakeland decided to compete on its own. So, five schools started the Bi-County Conference. Soon, some schools like Shipshewanna-Scott and Topeka planned to combine. Fremont and Hamilton were also in another conference.

Around the same time, five schools in Noble County were also planning to combine into two new schools. They needed a new conference to join. These Noble County schools teamed up with the Bi-County Conference schools. This is when they changed the name to the Northeast Corner Conference (NECC). Howe Military also joined that year.

More schools joined later. Lakeland joined in 1974. Fairfield joined in 1980. Garrett joined in 1981, and Eastside in 1983. Angola and Churubusco became members in 1989. Howe Military left in 1980. Garrett left in 2005 but came back in 2014.

On January 16, 2024, it was announced that Hamilton Community High School would be leaving. Hamilton was one of the original schools in the NECC. They will join the Hoosier Plains Conference in the fall of 2024.
