History of Oak Brook
Oak Brook was first known as Fullersburg. It was named after Ben Fuller, one of the first people to settle in the area.
How Oak Brook Became a Village
Oak Brook officially became a village in 1958. This happened largely because of Paul Butler. His father moved to the area in 1898 and started a dairy farm. Paul Butler was an important leader in the community. Before it became a village, local people called the area Oak Brook. They used this name to tell their community apart from nearby towns like Hinsdale and Elmhurst. This name had been used since the Oak Brook Civic Association was started almost 20 years earlier.
Growth and Development
When Oak Brook first became a village, it was smaller than it is today. However, a lot of land was added soon after. This included the land where the Oakbrook Center shopping mall now stands. The mall opened in 1962.
In 1964, Paul Butler worked with the Del E. Webb Corporation. This partnership helped develop the area even more. Webb's company built many homes and businesses in Oak Brook. They were involved in the village's growth until the late 1970s.
Paul Butler loved sports. This led to the creation of the Oak Brook Sports Core. It has fields for polo, a golf course, swimming pools, and tennis courts. These kinds of sports facilities are not common in a village of this size.
