History of Oakland
Oakland's story began to take shape in 1860 when its first Post Office opened. This Post Office was very important during the Civil War. It was the only one open in what is now Orange County, while Orlando's Post Office was closed.
After the war, the Post Office closed for a few years but reopened in 1877. In the 1880s, Oakland grew quickly. It became a busy center for business in western Orange County. The town officially became incorporated in 1887, meaning it was recognized as a town with its own local government.
However, Oakland faced some tough times. A big fire damaged its business area. Then, several cold freezes in the 1890s hurt local farming. Also, a nearby town, Winter Garden, started to grow a lot. These challenges made Oakland stay a smaller, quieter village for a while.
By 1940, Oakland's population grew enough to be the sixth largest in Orange County. But in 1950, its population dropped slightly to 545 people, and it became the seventh largest.
