Exploring Obermumpf's Past
Ancient Roots and Roman Times
Long ago, it's thought that people from the Hallstatt culture lived near Obermumpf. This was during the late Bronze Age and early Iron Age. Even though we haven't found their exact settlement, clues suggest they were here.
Later, during the Roman era, a farm stood near where the village church is today. Its ruins have been discovered, showing us that Romans lived and worked here. On the edge of the village, tombs belonging to the Alamanni people were also found. They were a Germanic tribe from ancient times.
How Obermumpf Got Its Name
The modern name of Obermumpf first appeared around the years 1302-1304. It was written as Obermumphier. For a long time, until 1797, Obermumpf was part of the Austrian Habsburgs' area called Rheinfelden.
Joining the Canton of Aargau
After a big change in 1803 called the Act of Mediation, the entire Fricktal region became part of the new Aargau canton. This included Obermumpf. The local legal rights, known as "low justice," were first held by a manor house called Stein. These rights later went to the Austrians.
The Village Churches
The Church of St. Peter and Paul is a very old building. Its tower was built in 1494, and the main part of the church, called the nave, was added in 1738. The very first church on this spot, from the 8th century, was built on top of the old Roman farm ruins.
Since 1889, this church has been the center for the Christian Catholic community of Obermumpf-Wallbach. A separate Catholic church was built in 1893-94 and then rebuilt in 1962.
