Odessa is a small town in New Castle County, Delaware, United States. In 2020, about 366 people lived there. This town was first called Cantwell's Bridge in the 1700s. Later, its name was changed to Odessa, like the port city in Ukraine. Today, a big part of Odessa is a historic district. This means it has many old buildings and places that are protected because they are important to history. It is even listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

History of Odessa

Odessa was first known as Cantwell's Bridge. In 1721, a son of Captain Edmund Cantwell built a toll bridge. This bridge crossed the Appoquinimink Creek. Cantwell's Bridge became a very important port. Ships carried wheat, corn, tobacco, and other farm products from here. They went down the creek to the Delaware Bay and then to other faraway ports. The town also had businesses that made leather goods. Cantwell's Bridge continued to be a busy farming port into the 1800s.

In 1855, the way people traded grain changed. A new railroad, the Delaware Railroad, was built. It went through Middletown, which is west of Odessa. The town's merchants and ship owners had not wanted the railroad to come through Cantwell's Bridge. After the railroad was built, the grain trade in Cantwell's Bridge became much smaller. To try and keep the town important, its name was changed to Odessa. This new name was inspired by the port city of Odesa in Ukraine. The town saw a small increase in activity during the American Civil War.
