The olive dasia (also called the olive tree skink) is a type of lizard that mostly lives in trees. It's found in Southeast Asia. It's a kind of skink, which is a lizard with smooth scales.

Where do olive dasias live?

The olive dasia lives in many parts of Southeast Asia. You can find it in countries like Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, Singapore, and Vietnam. It also lives on the large island of Borneo. This includes areas like Sarawak, Kalimantan, and Brunei.

You can also spot them on Indonesian islands such as Bali, Java, and Sumatra. They are even found on India's Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The first known place where this skink was found was in Cambodia.

Olive dasia life and conservation

Olive dasias spend almost all their time in trees. They only come down to lay their eggs or to move to another tree. A female olive dasia can lay eggs more than once a year. Each time, she might lay up to 14 eggs. The eggs take about 69 days to hatch.

Because this skink lives in so many places and can adapt easily, it is not considered to be in danger. The IUCN Red List says it is a species of Least Concern. This means there are plenty of them around.

How olive dasias were named

The olive dasia was first described by a scientist named John Edward Gray. He wrote about it in a science journal in 1839. He named it the type species for a new group of lizards called Dasia. The first place where this skink was officially found was an island called "Prince of Wales Island," which is now known as Penang Island.

What do olive dasias look like?

Adult olive dasias have a green back. Their scales near their sides are a bronze color. They have 12 bands of eye-like spots, called ocelli, that go from one side to the other. Their head is mostly a dark olive-green with black marks. The underside of their head can be bluish or yellowish green.
