Ollerton and Boughton is a community area in Nottinghamshire, England. It's made up of the town of Ollerton and the villages of New Ollerton and Boughton. This area became one combined community in 1996. Back in 2011, about 9,840 people lived here. By 2021, the population grew to 11,089 residents.

Discovering Ollerton

Ollerton was first called Alreton or Allerton. This name means 'farm among the alders'. It's located where several important roads meet. These roads connect places like York, London, Worksop, Newark, Lincoln, and Mansfield.

Because of its central spot, Ollerton became a meeting place. Forest officials and judges would gather here in medieval times. This led to the growth of two famous inns: The White Hart and The Hop Pole. For many years, people in Ollerton grew hops. Hop fields were found along the River Maun as early as 1691. The town even had a weekly hop market on Fridays.

The Markham family owned a lot of land here. They were very important in the town's history. They built and lived in Ollerton Hall. A book by Elizabeth Glaister tells the story of their lives during the Civil War.

Ollerton's Historic Watermills

Ollerton Watermill

For hundreds of years, watermills have been a key part of life in Ollerton. Today, you can find the only working watermill in Nottinghamshire right here. It was built in 1713. This mill stands on the same spot as one of the mills mentioned in the Domesday Book.

Exploring New Ollerton

The name New Ollerton started being used in the late 1800s. It described the village slowly growing between Ollerton Manor and the area where the New Plough pub and cemetery are now.

New Ollerton grew a lot when Ollerton became a coal mining village. This happened in the mid-1920s. A magazine called the Spectator once praised New Ollerton. It called it an 'admirable industrial housing scheme'. It was also known as a 'model village'. Miners living here had a good life. They had semi-detached houses with big gardens. Hot water was even supplied directly from Ollerton Colliery.

Learning About Boughton

Boughton is pronounced 'Booton'. It is mentioned in the Domesday Book, a very old survey of England. Boughton has a long and interesting past. It has seen Viking invaders and even Italian and German prisoners of war. At one point, it was part of the huge Rufford Estate.

Boughton was originally a small village. It was centered around St Matthew's Church. Farming was the main job until the 1930s. Then, Boughton started to change a lot. Ollerton Colliery, the coal mine, was built. Many new houses followed. Today, it can be hard to tell where New Ollerton ends and Boughton begins.
