Orpheus Saeger Woodward (born May 1, 1835 – died June 26, 1919) was a brave officer who fought for the Union Army during the American Civil War. He started as a private and rose through the ranks, showing great courage in many important battles.

Who Was Orpheus Saeger Woodward?

Orpheus Saeger Woodward was born in Harbor Creek, Pennsylvania, on May 1, 1835. Before the Civil War began, he worked as a farmer and also ran a hardware store. His life changed when he decided to join the army to help his country.

Joining the War Effort

Woodward began his military journey as a private soldier in the Erie Pennsylvania Infantry. This was a basic rank, but he quickly showed his skills and leadership. On September 13, 1861, he was promoted to captain of the 83rd Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment. This meant he was now in charge of a group of soldiers.

A Brave Officer in Battle

Captain Woodward was a part of many important battles during the Civil War. He was injured at the Battle of Malvern Hill, which shows how dangerous the fighting was. Despite his injury, he continued to serve with bravery.

On March 28, 1864, he was promoted again, this time to colonel of the 83rd Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment. As a colonel, he led even more soldiers. He took part in important campaigns like the Antietam Campaign. He also fought bravely at the Battle of Chancellorsville and at Little Round Top during the famous Battle of Gettysburg.

Sadly, Colonel Woodward was badly hurt at the Battle of the Wilderness on May 5, 1864. This injury was very serious, and he lost his right leg. Because of his severe wound, he had to leave the army on September 20, 1864.

Later Life and Honors

Even after leaving the army due to his injuries, Orpheus Saeger Woodward's bravery was remembered. On February 24, 1866, President Andrew Johnson honored him. The President nominated Woodward to be a 'brevet' brigadier general. A brevet rank is a special honorary promotion given for brave service, even if the person doesn't hold that rank in their everyday duties. The United States Senate agreed to this honor on April 10, 1866.

Orpheus Saeger Woodward passed away in Leavenworth, Kansas, on June 26, 1919. He was buried at Cedar Vale Cemetery in Neosho Falls, Kansas.
