Papcastle is a small village in Cumbria, England. It's located in the Allerdale area. The village is very close to Cockermouth, just north of the River Derwent.
Papcastle has its own local council, called a parish council. In 2011, about 385 people lived here. The name Papcastle might come from old words meaning 'the Roman fort where a hermit lived'.

Discovering Roman Derventio
It has been known for a long time that the Romans were present in Papcastle. This area was once the site of a Roman fort called Derventio.
The Roman Fort and Settlement
The fort was first built using timber (wood). Later, it was rebuilt with strong stone. Outside the fort, there was also a civilian settlement. This settlement was called a vicus. It was where families and traders lived near the soldiers.
In 1992, the remains of the fort and part of the vicus were officially named an ancient monument. This means they are protected because of their historical importance.
Excavations and New Finds
More parts of the Roman settlement were found in 1999. This happened during an episode of the British TV show Time Team. They dug up areas in Sibby Brows field and near a house in the village.
A major flood in 2009 led to exciting new discoveries. Roman remains were found on the south side of the River Derwent. These included well-preserved foundations of a watermill. This discovery led to a three-year archaeological project. During this time, archaeologists found several bathhouses, a mansio (a Roman inn), and even parts of a Roman bridge.
You can find more information about these discoveries on the village website here.
Papcastle Village Hall
The Papcastle Village Hall was built in 1895. It was originally a reading room just for men. Honora Wybergh, a local resident, donated it. She lived in a large house called The Mount, which was later taken down in the 1960s.
The hall is managed by a group of trustees. Over the years, the hall has been very popular at times and less so at others. In 2006, it had a big makeover. This was possible thanks to grants from many local groups. Today, it's a place for community events.
Bus Services
Stagecoach Cumbria runs a bus service, number 600. This bus connects Papcastle with nearby towns like Cockermouth, Wigton, and Carlisle. The bus runs from Monday to Saturday. It stops just outside the village, on the A5086 road.
There are also many other buses from Cockermouth town centre. These routes can take you to places like Keswick and Penrith.
