Papiss Demba Cissé (born 3 June 1985) is a professional footballer from Senegal. He plays as a forward, which means he is a goal scorer. Currently, he plays for UAE Third Division League team Al Qabila.
Papiss Cissé used to play for SC Freiburg in Germany. He once held a special record there. He scored the most goals by an African player in one Bundesliga season. He scored 22 goals in the 2010–11 season. Cissé also played for the Senegal national team from 2009 to 2015. He represented his country in the 2012 and 2015 Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.

Papiss Cissé's Football Journey
Starting His Career
Cissé started playing football with Génération Foot and Douanes Dakar in Senegal. In the summer of 2005, he moved to France to join Metz. After just one month, he was loaned to Cherbourg. He played 26 matches and scored 11 goals for Cherbourg. After that, Cissé returned to Metz. He was loaned out again to Châteauroux in January 2008 before coming back to Metz in July 2008.
Playing for SC Freiburg
On 28 December 2009, Cissé joined the German team SC Freiburg for about €1.62 million. Freiburg had been interested in him since 2009. In his first partial season with Freiburg, Cissé played 16 matches and scored six goals.
In the 2010–11 Bundesliga season, Cissé had an amazing year. He was the second-highest goal scorer in the league. Only Mario Gómez of Bayern Munich scored more goals (28). Cissé set a new record for Freiburg. His 22 goals were the most ever scored by a Freiburg player in one season. He also set a new record for the most goals scored by an African player in a single Bundesliga season. This record was previously held by Tony Yeboah. Cissé also won the EFFIFU award for being the most effective striker in the league that season.
Time at Newcastle United
Joining Newcastle United
On 21 January 2012, Cissé signed a five-and-a-half-year contract with Newcastle United. The transfer fee was around £9.3 million. He joined his fellow Senegalese striker Demba Ba at the club. Cissé was given the famous number 9 shirt, which was once worn by Newcastle legend Alan Shearer.
On 5 February, Cissé played his first game for Newcastle. It was a 2–1 win against Aston Villa. He came on as a substitute and scored the winning goal with an amazing volley. On 11 February, he started his first game for the club. On 25 February, he scored in a 2–2 draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Goal-Scoring Success
On 25 March, Cissé scored two goals in Newcastle's 3–1 win against West Bromwich Albion. His goals made him the fastest player since Les Ferdinand to score five goals for Newcastle. He continued to score, getting two goals against Liverpool in a 2–0 win. He scored another two goals against Swansea City on 6 April. This brought his total to nine goals in eight matches. This made him Newcastle's best goal scorer based on goals per game.
On 9 April, he scored his tenth goal in nine matches against Bolton Wanderers. On 21 April, he scored his 11th goal against Stoke City. Then, on 2 May 2012, he scored his 12th and 13th Premier League goals in a 2–0 win against Chelsea. One of these goals was a fantastic shot from far away that went over the goalkeeper. Cissé said it was the best goal of his career. It was also chosen as the BBC's Goal of the Season. He helped Newcastle finish in fifth place in the league.
2012–13 Season
Newcastle wanted Cissé to be fit for the new season, so they did not let him play for Senegal in the 2012 Summer Olympics. Cissé scored his first goal of the 2012–13 season in the League Cup against Manchester United. He also scored in Newcastle's Europa League win against Bordeaux. His first Premier League goal of the season came on 28 October against West Bromwich Albion.
Cissé scored a spectacular goal from 25 yards in Newcastle's 4–2 win over Southampton on 24 February 2013. This helped the team come back and win. He scored a winning goal in injury time against Stoke City on 10 March. On 14 March, in the Europa League, Cissé scored a winning header in the 94th minute against Anzhi Makhachkala. This helped Newcastle reach the quarter-finals. He also scored against Benfica in the Europa League quarter-final.
2013–14 Season
On 25 September 2013, Cissé scored his first goal of the 2013–14 season. It was in a 2–0 win against Leeds United in the Football League Cup. He scored his first Premier League goal of the season on Boxing Day against Stoke City.
On 22 March 2014, he scored a last-minute winning goal against Crystal Palace. This was only his second league goal of the season. Cissé's season ended on 19 April against Swansea City. He had to leave the game early due to an injury. It was later found that he had broken his kneecap and needed surgery.
2014–15 Season
After his knee injury, Cissé went to France to recover. He returned to Newcastle for pre-season training earlier than expected. On 10 September 2014, Newcastle manager Alan Pardew confirmed Cissé would return to the team for their match against Hull City on 20 September.
Cissé made his return against Hull on 20 September. He came on as a substitute and scored two goals. Newcastle came back from two goals down to draw 2–2. He celebrated his goals by showing a message for his teammate Jonás Gutiérrez, who had been diagnosed with cancer. Two weeks later, Cissé scored another two goals in a draw against Swansea City. On 5 December, he scored both goals as Newcastle beat Chelsea 2–1. This was Chelsea's first loss of the season.
He scored a penalty on Boxing Day against Manchester United. In the next match, on 28 December, he scored the equalizing goal in a 3–2 win over Everton. This brought his total to nine league goals in just 14 matches. After returning from the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, Cissé scored a header against Crystal Palace on 11 February. This was his tenth league goal of the season. On 28 February, he scored his 11th goal of the season against Aston Villa.
Cissé faced some disciplinary actions during this season. He received a ban from playing for several matches. He returned to the team on 9 May in a 1–1 draw with West Brom.
2015–16 Season
Cissé started the first match of the season against Southampton. He scored a goal to make the score 1–1. On 28 November 2015, he scored the first goal in a 5–1 loss to Crystal Palace. Cissé's last goal for Newcastle came in a 2–2 draw against Liverpool on 23 April 2016.
Moving to Shandong Luneng
On 9 July 2016, Cissé joined Chinese Super League club Shandong Luneng. He scored in his second game for the club, helping them win 4–1 against Hangzhou Greentown.
Playing for Alanyaspor
2018–19 Season
On 31 August 2018, Cissé signed with Alanyaspor in the Turkish Süper Lig. He played his first game on 1 September 2018. He scored his first goal and another one against Kasımpaşa on 23 September 2018, helping Alanyaspor win 2–1.
On 28 April 2019, Cissé was involved in a bus accident that sadly killed his teammate Josef Šural. Cissé had only minor injuries.
Time at Fenerbahçe
On 1 October 2020, Fenerbahçe announced that Cissé had joined their team.
Playing for Amiens
On 31 August 2022, Cissé signed with Ligue 2 team Amiens SC. He left the club on 1 July 2023.
Recent Career
In November 2023, Cissé started training with the English club Macclesfield. He has recently returned to playing football and is now with the UAE team Al Qabila FC.
International Football for Senegal
Cissé played his first international game for Senegal on 12 August 2009. It was a friendly match against Congo DR. He scored two goals, and Senegal won 2–1. In his fourth game for the national team, Cissé scored three goals (a hat-trick). This was on 9 October 2010, in a qualifying match for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations. Senegal won that game 7–0 against Mauritius. Cissé was also the captain of the Senegal team from 2012 to 2013. His most recent goal for Senegal was against Botswana in November 2014. He scored 16 international goals in total.
Papiss Cissé's Personal Life
Papiss Cissé is a Muslim. When he scores a goal, he often performs the Sujud, which is a prayer gesture.
