Papiss Demba Cissé (born 3 June 1985) is a former professional footballer from Senegal. He played as a forward, which means he was a goal scorer for his team. He also played for the Senegal national football team.
Before joining Newcastle United, Cissé played for SC Freiburg in Germany. He once held the record for the most goals scored by an African player in a single Bundesliga season. He scored 22 goals in the 2010–11 season! That same year, he won an award for being the most efficient striker in the league.
Papiss Cissé also played for his country, Senegal, many times. He played in the Africa Cup of Nations in 2012 and 2015.

Club career
Early days
Papiss Cissé started his football journey in Senegal with clubs like Génération Foot and Douanes Dakar. In 2005, he moved to France to play for Metz.
Soon after, he was loaned to another French team, Cherbourg. He played 26 matches there and scored 11 goals. After returning to Metz, he was loaned out again to Châteauroux before coming back to Metz for a third time.
Playing for SC Freiburg
In December 2009, Cissé moved to Germany to play for SC Freiburg, a team in the Bundesliga. He had impressed them earlier in a friendly match. In his first short season, he scored six goals in 16 games.
His first full season with Freiburg, 2010–11, was amazing! He scored 22 goals, which was the second-highest in the league. This set a new record for Freiburg players and also for African players in the Bundesliga. He was known as a very efficient striker.
Time at Newcastle United
2011–12 season: A flying start
On 21 January 2012, Papiss Cissé joined Newcastle United in England. He got the famous number 9 shirt, which was once worn by club legend Alan Shearer. He joined his fellow Senegalese striker, Demba Ba, at the club.
Cissé made a fantastic debut on 5 February against Aston Villa. He came on as a substitute and scored the winning goal with an incredible volley! He continued to score many goals, including two against West Bromwich Albion and two against Liverpool.
One of his most famous goals was against Chelsea on 2 May 2012. He curled the ball into the net from very far away, about 37 yards! He said it was the best goal of his career, and it was even chosen as the BBC's Goal of the Season. His amazing goals helped Newcastle finish fifth in the league.
2012–13 season: European adventures
In the 2012–13 season, Cissé scored his first goal in the League Cup against Manchester United. He also scored in the UEFA Europa League against Bordeaux, which was Newcastle's 100th game in European competitions.
He scored some important goals in the Premier League, including a spectacular 25-yard volley against Southampton. In the Europa League, he scored a winning goal in the last minute against Anzhi Makhachkala, helping Newcastle reach the quarter-finals. He also scored against Benfica in the quarter-finals.
2013–14 season: Injuries and comebacks
Cissé scored his first goal of the 2013–14 season in the Football League Cup against Leeds United. He also scored a penalty against Stoke City on Boxing Day.
His season ended early in April 2014 when he broke his kneecap during a game against Swansea City. He had to have surgery for the injury.
2014–15 season: Back in action
After recovering from his injury, Cissé returned to play for Newcastle in September 2014. In his first game back against Hull City, he came on as a substitute and scored two goals, helping his team get a 2–2 draw after being two goals down.
He continued to score important goals, including two against Chelsea, which gave Chelsea their first defeat of the season. He scored 11 league goals that season. However, he also received a long ban for an incident during a match against Manchester United.
2015–16 season: Final goals for Newcastle
Cissé scored in the first match of the 2015–16 season against Southampton. His final goal for Newcastle United came in a 2–2 draw against Liverpool in April 2016.
Moving to China and Turkey
In July 2016, Papiss Cissé moved to China to play for Chinese Super League club Shandong Luneng. He scored in his second game for the club.
In August 2018, he signed with Alanyaspor in Turkey. He scored two goals in his second game for them. Sadly, in April 2019, he was involved in a bus crash that killed his teammate Josef Šural. Cissé was lucky to escape with only minor injuries.
After Alanyaspor, he played for Fenerbahçe in Turkey in 2020. He then played for Çaykur Rizespor in 2022 and Amiens in France in 2022–2023. In November 2023, he began training with English club Macclesfield.
International career
Papiss Cissé made his first appearance for the Senegal national team on 12 August 2009. He scored two goals in that friendly match against Congo DR.
He scored three goals in one game against Mauritius in October 2010. Cissé also had the honor of being the captain of the Senegal team from 2012 to 2013. His last goal for Senegal was in November 2014, bringing his total to 17 international goals.
Personal life
Papiss Cissé is a Muslim. When he scores a goal, he often performs the Sujud, which is a prayer gesture. He, along with other Muslim players at Newcastle, had a disagreement about the club's shirt sponsorship deal due to his religious beliefs. This issue was later resolved.
