History of Park Hills

How Park Hills Was Formed

Park Hills became a city in a special way. In January 1994, four smaller places decided to join together. These were the cities of Flat River, Elvins, Esther, and the village of Rivermines. Before that, another village called Fairview Acres had already joined Flat River in 1983.

Choosing the Name Park Hills

A group of citizens from the four towns helped pick the new name. Mildred Lee, a teacher and longtime resident of Flat River, suggested "Park Hills." She got the idea from the many hills in the area, which are part of the Ozark Mountains. She also thought of the many parks nearby.

Park Hills is about 7 miles northwest of Farmington, Missouri. It's also about 65 miles south of St. Louis. The city is right next to St. Joe State Park. Many other state parks are close by, like St. Francois, Hawn, Elephant Rocks, Johnson's Shut-Ins, Taum Sauk Mountain, and Washington.

Education and Mining History

Park Hills is home to Mineral Area College. This college used to be called Flat River Junior College. The city is also in an area known as the Old Lead Belt. This area was once very important for lead mining.

The Eugene Field School is a special building in Park Hills. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. This means it's an important historical site.
