Patrick Christopher Chung (born August 19, 1987) is a former football safety who played 12 seasons in the National Football League (NFL). He is best known for his time with the New England Patriots, where he won three Super Bowl championships.
Chung played college football for the Oregon Ducks. The Patriots chose him in the second round of the 2009 NFL draft. He played for the Patriots for 11 seasons and spent one season with the Philadelphia Eagles. For his great career, Chung was named to the Patriots' All-2010s Team and All-Dynasty Team.

Early Life and Family
Patrick Chung was born in Kingston, Jamaica. His mother, Sophia George, was a famous reggae singer. Her 1985 song "Girlie Girlie" was a number one hit in Jamaica and a top-10 hit in the United Kingdom. His father, Ronald Chung, was her manager and music producer.
When Patrick was 10, his family moved from Jamaica to California. He attended Rancho Cucamonga High School, where he was a star football player. He played both safety and wide receiver and was named to the All-League team twice.
College Football Career
Chung played for the University of Oregon's football team, the Ducks. He became a starting player in 2005 and quickly became one of the team's best defenders. In his first year, he had 91 tackles and was named a Freshman All-American.
Over his four years at Oregon, Chung was known for his tough playing style and leadership. He was named to the All-Pac-10 first-team twice. He also set a school record by starting in 51 straight games, more than any other defensive player in Oregon's history.

After his successful college career, Chung entered the 2009 NFL draft. The New England Patriots selected him in the second round. This began his long and successful career in the NFL.
First Stint with the Patriots (2009–2012)
Chung quickly made an impact with the Patriots. In his second season, he became a starting safety. That year, he had an amazing game against the Miami Dolphins. He returned an interception for a touchdown and also blocked both a punt and a field goal.
During his first four years, Chung was a key part of the Patriots' defense. In the 2011 season, he helped the team reach Super Bowl XLVI. Although the Patriots lost to the New York Giants, Chung played well in the big game.
A Season with the Eagles (2013)
In 2013, Chung signed with the Philadelphia Eagles. His head coach was Chip Kelly, who had been his coach at Oregon. Chung started 10 games for the Eagles and helped them make the playoffs. After one season in Philadelphia, he was released from the team.
Return to New England and Super Bowl Wins (2014–2019)
Chung returned to the Patriots in 2014, and it was a perfect fit. He immediately became a starting safety again, playing alongside Devin McCourty. His return helped make the Patriots' defense one of the best in the league.
Super Bowl XLIX Champion
In the 2014 season, Chung and the Patriots had a great year. They made it all the way to Super Bowl XLIX. In the championship game, they defeated the Seattle Seahawks 28–24, earning Chung his first Super Bowl ring.
Super Bowl LI Champion
Two years later, Chung had another fantastic season. In 2016, he started every game and helped lead the Patriots to Super Bowl LI. In one of the most exciting games ever, the Patriots came back from a huge deficit to beat the Atlanta Falcons 34–28 in overtime. This was Chung's second championship.
Super Bowl LIII Champion
The Patriots' success continued, and in the 2018 season, they reached Super Bowl LIII. They faced the Los Angeles Rams and won 13–3 in a defensive battle. Chung earned his third Super Bowl ring, but he broke his arm during the game and had to leave early.
Retirement
Chung chose not to play in the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. On March 18, 2021, he announced his retirement from football. He left the sport as a three-time champion and a respected leader.
Personal Life
Chung is proud of his heritage. His father is of Chinese-Jamaican descent, and his mother is Jamaican. He has a tattoo of his Chinese name on his arm. He has one son, Taj, who was born in 2010.
Chung is also a part-owner of the New England Free Jacks, a professional rugby team. The team has been very successful, winning championships in 2023, 2024, and 2025.
