Patrick Christopher Chung is a former professional football player. He was a safety in the National Football League (NFL). Patrick played for 12 seasons, mostly with the New England Patriots. He was born on August 19, 1987.

Patrick played college football for the Oregon Ducks. The Patriots chose him in the second round of the 2009 NFL draft. He played for the Patriots for 11 seasons. For one season, he played for the Philadelphia Eagles. Patrick won the Super Bowl three times with the Patriots. He was also named to the Patriots' special teams for the 2010s and their "All-Dynasty Team" in 2020.

Patrick Chung's Early Life

Patrick Chung was born in Kingston, Jamaica. His mother is Sophia George, a famous Jamaican singer. She had a hit song called "Girlie Girlie" in 1985. His father, Ronald Chung, was a music manager. Patrick has four brothers and three sisters. His family moved to Miami and then to Los Angeles. Patrick's father's family is of Chinese descent.

Patrick lived in Jamaica until he was ten years old. Then, he moved to California. He went to Rancho Cucamonga High School in Rancho Cucamonga, California. He played football as a safety and a wide receiver. He was chosen as an All-League player twice.

Patrick's College Football Career

Patrick started at the University of Oregon in 2004. He didn't play in 2004, which is called a redshirt year.

Playing for the Oregon Ducks

In 2005, Patrick became a "rover" player. He was second on his team with 91 tackles. He also caused a fumble and blocked five passes. He was recognized as an All-Pacific-10 Conference player. He also made the Sporting News Freshman All-American Team. In 2006, he was again an All-Pac-10 honorable mention. He had 84 tackles, two sacks, and four interceptions.

As a junior, Patrick was named Second Team All-American. He was also on the first-team All-Pac-10 Conference. He won an award for being the team's best special teams player. He led the Ducks with 117 tackles and had two interceptions.

In 2008, Patrick was named Third Team All-American. He made the All-Pac 10 first-team for the second year in a row. He and another player, Max Unger, started 51 games in a row. This was a school record. Patrick had 92 tackles and scored a touchdown by returning an interception 31 yards.

Patrick Chung started more games than any other defensive player in Oregon's history. He started 51 games during his time in college.

Patrick Chung's Professional Football Career

Patrick first thought about entering the 2008 NFL draft. But he decided to stay at Oregon for his senior year. In 2009, he played in the 2009 Senior Bowl. He also went to the NFL Scouting Combine. Experts thought he would be picked in the second round of the NFL draft.

First Time with the New England Patriots

The New England Patriots chose Patrick Chung in the second round of the 2009 NFL draft. He was the 34th player picked overall. He was the second safety chosen in that draft.

2009 Season: Rookie Year

On July 27, 2009, the Patriots signed Patrick to a four-year contract. It was worth $5 million. Patrick competed to become a starting safety. He started the season as a backup.

He played his first NFL game against the Buffalo Bills. He made his first NFL tackle in that game. In Week 6, he had eight tackles and made his first NFL interception. This was against the Tennessee Titans. The next week, he got his first NFL sack. In Week 10, he started his first NFL game.

Patrick finished his first year with 37 tackles, two sacks, and one interception. The Patriots won their division. Patrick played in his first NFL playoff game, but the Patriots lost.

2010 Season: Starting Strong Safety

In 2010, Patrick became the starting strong safety for the Patriots. In the first game, he had a career-high 16 tackles. On October 4, 2010, he scored his first touchdown. He returned an interception 51 yards. He also blocked a punt and a field goal in that game. He missed two games because of a knee injury.

2011 Season: Super Bowl Appearance

He finished the 2011 season with 62 tackles, four pass deflections, and one interception. The Patriots reached Super Bowl XLVI. Patrick started in the Super Bowl and had six tackles. However, the Patriots lost to the New York Giants.

2012 Season: Injuries and Role Change

Patrick started the first six games of 2012. He then got a shoulder injury and missed four games. During this time, another player, Devin McCourty, took over his starting role. When Patrick returned, he was a backup.

He finished the season with 44 tackles, five pass deflections, and two interceptions.

On March 12, 2013, the Philadelphia Eagles signed Patrick to a three-year contract. He joined his old college coach, Chip Kelly. Patrick became the starting free safety for the Eagles.

He missed some games due to a shoulder injury. He also lost his starting spot for a while. He got it back later in the season. He finished his only season with the Eagles with 59 tackles.

The Eagles won their division. Patrick played in a playoff game, but the Eagles lost. On March 11, 2014, the Eagles released Patrick. This meant they let him go from the team.

Second Time with the New England Patriots

2014 Season: Super Bowl Champion Again

On April 3, 2014, the Patriots signed Patrick again. He competed to be the starting strong safety and won the job.

In Week 13, he had 11 tackles. In Week 15, he had ten tackles and an interception. He finished the season with 85 tackles, eight pass deflections, and one interception.

The Patriots won their division again. They reached the Super Bowl. On February 1, 2015, Patrick started in Super Bowl XLIX. He made a tackle as the Patriots won 28–24 against the Seattle Seahawks. This was his first Super Bowl win.

2015 Season: Continued Success

On January 9, 2015, the Patriots gave Patrick a new contract. In Week 10, he had 12 tackles. He missed a game due to a hip injury. He finished the season with 85 tackles, nine pass deflections, and one forced fumble. He was ranked as one of the best safeties in the league.

The Patriots won their division for the second year in a row. Patrick played in the AFC Divisional Round, where the Patriots won. They then lost in the AFC Championship Game.

2016 Season: Another Super Bowl Ring

On April 1, 2016, the Patriots extended Patrick's contract again. In Week 5, he had seven tackles and an interception. In Week 7, he had 11 tackles. In Week 11, he had nine tackles and a sack. He finished the 2016 season with 91 tackles, three pass deflections, and one interception.

2017 Season: Back to the Super Bowl

Patrick continued as a starting safety in 2017. In Week 10, he had four tackles and an interception. In Week 12, he had ten tackles.

He finished the 2017 season with 84 tackles, nine pass deflections, and one sack. The Patriots won their division and reached the Super Bowl for the second year in a row. On February 4, 2018, Patrick started in Super Bowl LII. He had six tackles but left the game with a concussion. The Patriots lost to the Philadelphia Eagles.

2018 Season: Third Super Bowl Victory

On March 19, 2018, the Patriots signed Patrick to another contract extension. He was also named a team captain for the first time.

Patrick got injured early in the second half of Super Bowl LIII. He broke his arm. He did not return to the game. However, the Patriots won 13-3 against the Los Angeles Rams. This was Patrick's third Super Bowl win. He had surgery on his broken arm after the game.

2019 Season

On April 12, 2019, Patrick signed another contract extension with the Patriots.

2020 Season and Retirement

On May 20, 2020, Patrick signed a two-year contract extension. However, on July 29, 2020, he chose not to play in the 2020 season. This was due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Patrick Chung announced his retirement from the NFL on March 18, 2021. He played for 12 seasons.

Patrick's Personal Life

Patrick Chung has Chinese Jamaican heritage. His Chinese name is 钟家庭 (Zhōng Jiātíng), which is tattooed on his right arm.

His mother, Sophia George-Chung, is a famous Jamaican reggae singer from the 1980s. His father, Ronald Chung, was a music producer and his mother's manager.

Patrick had his first child, Taj James Chung, on September 18, 2010.

Patrick and his former teammate Nate Ebner are part owners of a rugby team. The team is called the New England Free Jacks and plays in Major League Rugby.
