Patrick Cutrone's Club Career
Starting at AC Milan
Patrick Cutrone was born in Como, Italy. He started playing football at a very young age. In 2005, when he was just 7 years old, he joined his local team, GS Parediense.
In 2007, he tried out for several big clubs like Internazionale, Monza, and AC Milan. On June 29, 2007, he officially joined AC Milan's youth academy. He spent ten years there, moving up through different age groups until he reached the Primavera (under-19) team. In March 2015, Cutrone signed his first professional contract with AC Milan.
Making his Senior Debut
Cutrone was first called up to the senior team in October 2016 but did not play. In January 2017, he became part of Milan's first team. He made his official senior debut on May 21, 2017, in a Serie A match against Bologna. He came on as a substitute in the 85th minute.
In the summer of 2017, Cutrone extended his contract with AC Milan. Even though Milan bought many new players, including two other strikers, Cutrone decided to stay. He wanted to earn his playing time at his home club.
First Goals for Milan
On July 27, 2017, Cutrone started his first game for Milan. It was a Europa League qualification match against Universitatea Craiova. He scored his first goal for Milan on August 3 in the return match.
He scored his first Serie A goal on August 20 against Crotone. Later, he scored a winning goal in the Europa League group stage against Rijeka. He also scored his first goal in the Derby della Madonnina against local rivals Internazionale in the Coppa Italia.
In January 2018, Cutrone scored against Lazio. There was some discussion about whether he used his arm to score, but an investigation showed it was accidental. In February 2018, he scored two goals in a 4–0 win against SPAL.
New Strikers and Limited Playtime
In 2018, AC Milan signed a famous striker, Gonzalo Higuaín. Cutrone was the only young striker who stayed with the team. On August 31, 2018, Cutrone came on as a substitute and scored a last-minute winning goal against Roma. This helped Milan get their first win of the season.
In October 2018, Cutrone signed another contract extension with Milan until 2023. However, in January 2019, Milan bought another striker, Krzysztof Piątek. The coach, Gennaro Gattuso, preferred to play with only one main striker. This meant Cutrone had less time on the field. His performance also dropped, and he didn't score or assist in 18 games.
Moving to Wolverhampton Wanderers
On July 30, 2019, Cutrone joined Wolverhampton Wanderers in England. He signed a four-year contract. He made his debut for Wolves in a 2019–20 UEFA Europa League match against FC Pyunik.
His first Premier League game was on August 11 against Leicester City. Cutrone scored his first goal for Wolves on September 14 in a game against Chelsea. On December 4, 2019, he scored against West Ham United just two minutes after coming on as a substitute.
Loan Spells
On January 10, 2020, Cutrone went on an 18-month loan to Fiorentina in Italy. He scored his first goal for Fiorentina in a Coppa Italia match against Atalanta.
He returned to Wolves briefly in January 2021. However, on January 31, 2021, he was loaned out again, this time to La Liga club Valencia in Spain.
After his time in Spain, Cutrone returned to Italy for the 2021–22 season. He joined Empoli, a team that had just been promoted to Serie A.
Joining Como
On August 29, 2022, Cutrone signed a three-year contract with his hometown club, Como. The team plays in Serie B, the second-highest league in Italy.
Patrick Cutrone's International Career
Cutrone has played for Italy at many youth levels. He represented the under-15, under-16, under-17, under-18, and under-19 teams. He played a total of 57 games and scored 27 goals for these youth teams. He was part of the squads for the 2015 European U-17 Championship and the 2016 European U-19 Championship.
He made his debut for the Italy U21 team on September 1, 2017. He scored his first goal for the U21 team three days later against Slovenia U21.
In March 2018, Cutrone was called up to the senior Italy national team for the first time. He made his senior international debut on March 23 in a friendly match against Argentina.
He was also part of Italy's under-21 team for the 2019 UEFA European Under-21 Championship. He scored a goal in a 3–1 win against Belgium.
Patrick Cutrone's Style of Play
Patrick Cutrone is known for his strong ability to score goals. Many football experts describe him as a "true number 9" striker. His main strengths include his physical power, good positioning, and excellent heading ability. He is also good at finding opportunities and moving smartly on the field.
People also praise his hard work when he doesn't have the ball. While his technique and team play can still improve, he has been compared to former AC Milan striker Filippo Inzaghi. Inzaghi used to coach Cutrone when he was in Milan's youth academy.
Cutrone has always been a big fan of AC Milan. When he was younger, he looked up to players like Mattia Destro, Andrea Belotti, and Álvaro Morata. Even though he is naturally right-footed, he can shoot well with both feet.
Sometimes, his former coach Gennaro Gattuso used him as a left winger. He can also play alongside another striker in a 4–4–2 formation. Former Milan player Daniele Massaro called Cutrone a "supersub" because he often scores important goals after coming off the bench.
