Pave Lane's Past

A historic milepost on the old A41 road in Pave Lane.

Pave Lane was once located on an important road. This road connected Newport to Wolverhampton. Because of its location, many inns and places for coaches to stop were built here. These places helped travelers and their horses. The road later became known as the A41.

In 1767, a local landowner named Lord Gower started a small business here. He opened a lime works and a brick works. He also made Pave Lane the end point of the Donnington Wood Canal. This canal was used to transport goods. Limestone and coal were sold at the canal's wharf in Pave Lane. These materials were important for the growing town of Newport.

Over time, new ways of transport like railways became popular. This meant canals were used less often. The part of the canal near Pave Lane closed in 1882. Since then, this section of the canal has been filled in. Today, the main A41 road no longer goes through Pave Lane. It now runs on a new path just east of Pave Lane and Chetwynd Aston.

Famous People from Pave Lane

Pave Lane has been home to some well-known people. Jeremy Corbyn, who used to lead the Labour Party, lived here. His brother, Piers Corbyn, who is known for forecasting weather, also grew up in Pave Lane.

They lived in a 17th-century brick house called Yew Tree Manor. This house used to be an inn. Their parents bought and fixed it up to be their family home. You can still see Yew Tree Manor marked on old maps.
