Pedro Mariño de Lobera (born 1528, died 1594) was a soldier from Galicia in Spain. He was also a conquistador, which means he was a Spanish explorer and soldier who helped conquer new lands in the Americas. Pedro Mariño de Lobera wrote important stories about the Arauco War in a place called Chile.

Biography

Early Life and Adventures

Pedro Mariño de Lobera was a trained soldier. He fought in a war between Spain and France. In 1545, he traveled across the ocean to the Americas.

He joined a group led by Pedro de La Gasca in Havana, Cuba. They had an order from King Carlos V to stop a rebellion in Peru. After this, Pedro Mariño de Lobera moved to Lima. He stayed there until 1551, when he went to Chile.

Soldier in Chile

In Chile, Pedro Mariño de Lobera was a brave and important soldier. He fought alongside famous leaders like Pedro de Valdivia and Francisco de Villagra. He took part in the first military trips to the southern parts of Chile.

He also served in battles led by governors García Hurtado de Mendoza and Rodrigo de Quiroga.

Life After Fighting

Later, for his loyal service, Pedro Mariño de Lobera was given an encomienda. This was a special grant that gave him control over a group of native people and their land in the city of Valdivia.

He became the corregidor (a type of local governor) of Valdivia. He helped the people there after a big flood caused by the Valdivia earthquake of 1575. Later, he was also the corregidor of Camaná, a city on the coast of Peru, before returning to Lima.

His Famous Book

In his final years, Pedro Mariño de Lobera became friends with a priest named Bartolomé de Escobar. This priest had also been in Chile. Pedro Mariño de Lobera gave his handwritten stories, called Chronicle of the Kingdom of Chile, to Father Escobar. He wanted the priest to correct and publish them.

Even though Father Escobar edited the book, it was not printed at that time. It was finally published much later, in 1865. His book is a very important source of information about the early history of Chile. Pedro Mariño de Lobera passed away in Lima in 1594.
