Peter A. Ramsey, born on December 23, 1962, is a talented American artist and filmmaker. He is known for his amazing work as an illustrator, storyboard artist, and director. He made history by becoming the first African American to direct a major animated film in Hollywood. He also won an Academy Award for his work!

Growing Up and Early Studies

Peter Ramsey grew up in a part of South Los Angeles called Crenshaw. He finished high school at Palisades High School in 1980. After high school, he studied painting at the University of California, Los Angeles for two years. Later, he took film classes at Los Angeles City College.

Peter Ramsey's Career in Film

Peter Ramsey's first job in Hollywood was painting a mural. Soon after, he started working as a storyboard artist and production illustrator. A storyboard artist draws pictures that show how a movie scene will look, like a comic book version of the film. A production illustrator creates drawings and designs for the movie's look.

He worked on many famous movies. These included Predator 2, Backdraft, Independence Day, Fight Club, and A.I. Artificial Intelligence. He also worked as a second unit director for films like Poetic Justice and Godzilla. A second unit director films scenes that don't involve the main actors, like action sequences or landscapes.

Becoming a Director

A producer named Aron Warner suggested Peter Ramsey join DreamWorks Animation. At first, he wasn't sure, but he eventually joined. He worked as a story artist for movies like Shrek the Third.

In 2012, Peter Ramsey directed Rise of the Guardians. This movie was based on the books The Guardians of Childhood by William Joyce. With this film, he became the first African American to direct a big animated movie.

In 2018, he co-directed Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. This movie was a huge success! It won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2019. This made Peter Ramsey the first African American to win this prestigious award.

Ramsey is also working on new projects. He is set to write and direct a vampire thriller called Blood Count. He will also direct a movie about the musician Robert Johnson called Love is Vain. In 2021, he was chosen to direct a film based on the novel Boy21.

Recent TV Series Work

In 2022, Peter Ramsey was hired to direct episodes for two popular Star Wars TV shows. He directed an episode for The Mandalorian season 3, which came out in March 2023. He also directed an episode for Ahsoka, released in August 2023.
