Peter A. Ramsey (born December 23, 1962) is an American artist and filmmaker. He is famous for directing animated movies and TV shows. Peter Ramsey made history as the first African American to direct a major computer-animated film. This was Rise of the Guardians in 2012. He also co-directed Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018). For this movie, he won an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, becoming the first African American to do so.

Early Life and Education
Peter Ramsey grew up in the Crenshaw area of South Los Angeles. He finished high school at Palisades High School in 1980. After high school, he studied painting at the University of California, Los Angeles for two years. Later, he took film classes at Los Angeles City College.
Peter Ramsey's Career
Peter Ramsey started his career in Hollywood by painting a mural. Soon after, he began working as a storyboard artist. A storyboard artist draws pictures that show how a movie scene will look, like a comic book version of the film. He also worked as a production illustrator, helping to design the look of movies. He worked on many films, including Predator 2, Independence Day, and Fight Club.
He also worked as a second unit director on films like Poetic Justice and Godzilla. A second unit director films scenes that don't involve the main actors, like action sequences or landscapes.
Joining DreamWorks Animation
A film producer named Aron Warner suggested Peter Ramsey join DreamWorks Animation. Peter Ramsey became a story artist for animated movies like Shrek the Third and Shrek the Halls.
Directing Animated Films
In 2012, Peter Ramsey directed Rise of the Guardians. This movie was based on the Guardians of Childhood books by William Joyce. This made him the first African American to direct a big animated movie.
In 2018, he co-directed Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. This movie was a huge success and won many awards. It won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2019.
Recent Projects
Peter Ramsey has been busy with new projects. He is set to write and direct a vampire thriller called Blood Count. He is also working on a movie about the musician Robert Johnson called Love is Vain. In 2021, he was chosen to direct a film based on the novel Boy21.
In 2022, Peter Ramsey directed episodes for two popular Star Wars TV series. He directed an episode of The Mandalorian in its third season, which came out in March 2023. He also directed an episode of Ahsoka, released in August 2023.
