Pokémon: Jirachi—Wish Maker is an exciting anime movie from 2003. It's the sixth movie in the popular Pokémon series. This film was the first to feature characters from the Advanced Generation part of the show.

A short film called "Gotta Dance" (おどるポケモンひみつ基地, Odoru Pokemon Himitsu Kichi, Secret Base of the Dancing Pokémon) was shown with the movie. Pokémon: Jirachi—Wish Maker first came out in Japan on July 19, 2003. The English version was released later, on June 1, 2004. The story of the movie happens during the sixth season of the TV show, Pokémon: Advanced.

The main song in the Japanese movie is A Small Thing by Asuca Hayashi. The English version of the song is called Make a Wish and was sung by Cindy Mizelle. This song's tune is also a lullaby that May and Max's mother used to sing to them. This movie was special because it was the first time the original Japanese song was also clearly used in the English version. It was also the first time that the names of the guest characters were the same in both versions.

The main place in the movie, Forina, is based on a real place called Wulingyuan in Hunan Province, China.

Plot Summary

Gotta Dance!

This short story is about Team Rocket and their new secret base. After building their base, Team Rocket's Pokémon manage to catch three Whismur. They want the Whismur to entertain Giovanni, their boss, when he arrives. To make the Whismur dance, Meowth uses a special baton. When a button on the baton is pressed, Pokémon start dancing and can't stop!

Meanwhile, Pikachu, Treecko, Torchic, Mudkip, and Lotad find the base. They try to free the Whismur. A funny thing that keeps happening in the short is that the dancing baton gets turned on or off by accident. This causes the base to be accidentally destroyed. All the Pokémon, including a wild Ludicolo and Loudred, dance out of control and mess everything up!

Jirachi—Wish Maker

The main story is about the Millennium Comet. This special comet appears in the night sky for seven days once every thousand years. When it appears, the Mythical Pokémon Jirachi wakes up from its very long sleep. Jirachi absorbs the comet's energy. This energy then goes into the ground, bringing life to a special area called Forina, where Jirachi rests.

This time, a magician named Butler and his girlfriend Diane find the stone that holds Jirachi. They take it away from Forina. At the same time, Ash Ketchum and his friends May, Max, and Brock arrive at a large crater. This is where the Millennium Comet festival is supposed to be. When they see nothing there, they decide to wait until morning. While they are sleeping, the festival arrives! Pikachu, Ash's Pokémon friend, sees it first and wakes everyone up. They all watch the festival being set up.

At the festival, May buys a special seven-panel toy. It is said to grant one wish if a panel is closed each night the comet is visible. Later, Ash and Max accidentally become part of one of Butler's magic tricks. Max hears a voice coming from the rock Diane is holding and runs to the stage. Max meets Jirachi, who he hears talking from inside the rock. Butler lets Max take the rock, and Jirachi comes out of it later that night. Max hopes Jirachi's wishing power is real. He wishes for a lot of candy, and it appears! But it turns out Jirachi didn't create the candy. It just teleported it from a candy stall at the festival.

Butler's true plans are soon revealed. He used to be a scientist for a group called Team Magma. He was trying to bring back the powerful Groudon. Butler had a great plan, but he couldn't find enough power to make his machine work. Because of this, he was fired from Team Magma, which made him very upset. To try and power his machine again, he wants to use Jirachi's energy for his own goals. Seeing this danger, the Pokémon Absol arrives to help Jirachi and warn the group. Absol's presence often means trouble is coming.

Butler tries to use Jirachi's power, but Ash and his friends stop him inside the circus tent. With help from Diane and Absol, they take Butler's bus to Forina. They want Jirachi to go home. What they don't know is that Butler's Mightyena puts a tracking device on the bus as it leaves. As Ash and his friends travel on a bumpy road, the device falls off. But Butler still figures out where they are going.

Before the day Jirachi has to return, Max feels sad about losing his new friend. Ash tells him about his friend Misty. He explains that even if they don't see each other anymore, they will always be friends. Before the group can get back to Forina, they realize Butler has followed them and set a trap. Butler manages to steal Jirachi again, trying to take its power once more.

When Butler starts his plan, a fake Groudon monster is created instead of the real one. This monster starts to absorb energy from everything around it. It turns Forina into a dry wasteland, killing all the plants. It also starts absorbing all living creatures, including May, Brock, and Team Rocket, who had followed them. When Diane is absorbed by the fake Groudon, Butler realizes that his relationship with her is more important than his plan. With Ash and Max's help, he manages to distract the fake Groudon.

Finally, Jirachi takes back the energy that created the fake Groudon. It then uses its powerful move, Doom Desire, to destroy the monster for good. After this, Jirachi leaves to go back to sleep for another thousand years. May, in all the excitement, forgets to close the last panel of her wishing toy. But she doesn't worry about it. Even though she never says what she wished for, she believes it will still come true. Before they leave Forina, Max hears Jirachi's voice one last time. Jirachi reminds him that they will always be friends.

During the end credits, May gets tired of walking. The man who sold her the wishing star gives them a ride in his truck. Then they look at the stars. The group sees constellations that look like Pokémon, from Teddiursa to Pikachu. They all watch the festival's fireworks before continuing their adventure.
