Poliez-le-Grand was once a small town, or municipality, located in the Vaud region of Switzerland. It was part of the Gros-de-Vaud area.

On July 1, 2011, Poliez-le-Grand joined with three other towns: Dommartin, Naz, and Sugnens. Together, they formed a brand new municipality called Montilliez.

History of Poliez-le-Grand

Poliez-le-Grand is a very old place. It was first mentioned in writings between the years 1160 and 1179. Back then, it was known as Poleto. Later, in 1225, its name changed slightly to Pollie lo Grant.

Geography and Location

Poliez-le-Grand covers an area of about 5.07 square kilometers (about 1.96 square miles). A large part of this land, about 79.3%, is used for farming. Forests cover about 11.8% of the area. The remaining 8.5% is where buildings and roads are located.

Most of the forested land is covered with thick forests. For farming, people mainly grow crops on 63.1% of the land. The rest, about 15.2%, is used for pastures where animals graze.

Poliez-le-Grand is located on the right side of the Talent river. It used to be part of the Echallens District. However, that district was closed in 2006. Poliez-le-Grand then became part of the new Gros-de-Vaud district.

In 2009, Poliez-le-Grand had a population of 692 people. Over ten years, from 1999 to 2009, the number of people living there grew by about 31.3%. Most of this growth was because people moved into the town.

Most people in Poliez-le-Grand speak French. In 2000, about 94.1% of the population spoke French. German was the second most common language, spoken by 3.8% of people. A small number of people also spoke Spanish.

Many people living in Poliez-le-Grand were born in the same region of Switzerland. In 2000, about 26.3% were born in Poliez-le-Grand itself. About 48.1% were born elsewhere in the Vaud region.

The town has a good mix of age groups. In 2009, about 21.7% of the population were children aged 0-9. Teenagers (10-19 years old) made up about 15.3%. Adults between 20 and 59 years old made up a large part of the population. There were also older adults, with about 6.9% aged 60-69 and smaller groups of even older residents.

According to a survey in 2000, many people in Poliez-le-Grand were Christian. About 35.2% were Roman Catholic. A larger group, about 50.2%, belonged to the Swiss Reformed Church. Some people also belonged to other Christian churches. A small number of people were Islamic. About 9.09% of the population did not belong to any church or had no specific religion.

Economy and Jobs

In 2010, the unemployment rate in Poliez-le-Grand was 2.5%. This means a very small number of people who wanted jobs couldn't find them.

Many people worked in different types of jobs. In 2008, about 29 people worked in the primary sector, which includes farming. There were 14 businesses related to this. Education is important in Poliez-le-Grand. In 2000, about 39.2% of the people had finished high school. Also, about 12.1% had gone on to higher education, like a university or a specialized college.

In the 2009/2010 school year, there were 83 students in the Poliez-le-Grand school area. The Vaud region offers two years of optional pre-school. The local area provided pre-school care for 296 children.

The main primary school program lasts for four years, and 41 students were in this program. The required middle school program lasts for six years, and 41 students attended these schools. A few students were also homeschooled or went to other special schools.

In 2000, 90 students who lived in Poliez-le-Grand went to schools outside the municipality.
