History of Port Dickinson

The village of Port Dickinson officially became a village in 1876. Its name comes from two things. First, it was once a busy "port" on the Chenango Canal. A port is a place where boats can load and unload goods. The Chenango Canal no longer exists.

Second, the village was named to honor United States Senator Daniel S. Dickinson. Today, Port Dickinson is mostly a place where people live. It is a suburb of Binghamton, meaning it's a residential area near a larger city. Port Dickinson is the only village in the town of Dickinson.

The Bevier-Wright House, an old and important building, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2008. This means it is recognized for its historical value.

Neighboring Areas

The Chenango River is on the west side of the village. This river flows into the Susquehanna River. On the east side, you'll find the Canadian Pacific Railway. Beyond the railway is more land that is part of the town of Dickinson.

Flooding in the Area

Over the years, there have been several big floods in this region. To help protect the area, the US Army Corps of Engineers built an earth levee (a raised bank to prevent water from overflowing) along the Chenango River and Phelps Creek in 1943. They also dug out the channel of Phelps Creek. These projects helped reduce damage from floods.

Some major floods happened in 1810, 1865, 1889, 1894, 1935, 1936, 2006, and most recently in 2011. In 1949, more work was done on the Chenango River to improve its flow. Smaller floods still happen sometimes, usually about every 10 years.
