Port Sanilac is a small village located in Sanilac County, Michigan, a state in the United States. It sits right on the beautiful shore of Lake Huron. In 2020, about 567 people lived in Port Sanilac.

History of Port Sanilac
Port Sanilac started as a settlement for lumberjacks on the shore of Lake Huron. It was first called "Bark Shanty." In the late 1840s and 1850s, the community grew. It gained its first sawmill, a schoolhouse, and a general store.
In 1854, Bark Shanty opened its first post office. The village was renamed Port Sanilac in 1857. It got its new name because it is located in Sanilac Township, which is in Sanilac County. Important Landmarks in Port Sanilac
Port Sanilac has some interesting old buildings and places.
- The Port Sanilac lighthouse is a famous landmark. It first opened in 1886 and used kerosene for its light. In 1924, it was updated to use electricity.
- Another important building is a large Victorian mansion. It has twenty rooms and was built in 1872. A doctor named Dr. Joseph Loop, who traveled by horse and buggy, built it. Today, this mansion is the Sanilac County Museum.
- The Sanilac Shores Underwater Preserve is a special area in the lake. It is known for its many shipwrecks. This preserve is very popular with people who enjoy scuba diving.

Port Sanilac is located at 43°25′56″N 82°32′33″W / 43.43222°N 82.54250°W. The village covers about 0.80 square miles (2.20 square kilometers) of land. It is part of an area in Michigan called the Thumb. This area gets its name because it looks like a thumb on a map of Michigan.
Port Sanilac Harbor
The Port Sanilac Harbor is on the west side of Lake Huron. It is about 30 miles north of Port Huron, Michigan. This harbor was built to be a safe place for boats to stop during storms. It is protected by strong walls called breakwaters.
The harbor basin is 10 feet deep, and the entrance channel is 12 feet deep. The harbor is mostly used by people who enjoy recreational boating.

Education in Port Sanilac
Students in Port Sanilac attend Carsonville-Port Sanilac Schools. The high school and middle school are combined. They are located off M-46, between Port Sanilac and Carsonville.
Port Sanilac's last elementary school closed in the early 1980s. That building is now used as the Bark Shanty Community Center. Younger students travel by bus to Carsonville for elementary school.
