Portein (which is Purtagn in Romansh) was a small town, also called a municipality, in Switzerland. It was located in the Swiss canton of Graubünden, specifically in the Hinterrhein district.

On January 1, 2010, Portein joined with three other towns: Präz, Sarn, and Tartar. They all became part of a larger municipality called Cazis.

Portein's Coat of Arms

The coat of arms for Portein is silver (white). It shows a black bear standing upright. This bear has red claws and is holding a golden tree trunk.

This special bear carrying a tree trunk is linked to Saint Gall. He is a very important saint for the church in Portein, which follows the Reformed faith.

History of Portein

Portein is quite an old place. The first time it was ever written about was in the year 1378. Back then, its name was spelled Purteyn.

Geography of Portein

Portein covers an area of about 3.4 square kilometers (which is about 1.3 square miles).

Most of this land, about 58.8%, is used for farming. Forests cover another 31% of the area. Only a small part, 2%, has buildings or roads. The rest, about 8.2%, is made up of things like rivers, glaciers, or mountains that aren't used for anything.

The town is located in a region called Heinzenberg. It sits on a high ridge, which is like a long, narrow hilltop. This ridge is between two valleys, the Porteiner Tobel and the Val da la Malanotg. Portein is quite high up, at an altitude of about 1,178 meters (or 3,865 feet) above sea level.

The village itself is a Haufendorf. This means it's an irregular, unplanned village with buildings packed closely together around a central area.

Population and People

In 2007, Portein had a very small population of just 22 people. Only 3 of these people were from other countries. Over the ten years before 2007, the number of people living in Portein stayed about the same.

In the year 2000, about 40.9% of the people in Portein were male, and 59.1% were female.

Most adults in Portein (about 90.9% of those aged 25 to 64) have finished either high school or gone on to higher education, like university.

Portein had a very low unemployment rate, meaning almost everyone who wanted a job had one. In 2005, there were 7 people working in farming, which is the primary economic sector. There were no jobs in factories or services in the village.

Smallest Municipality

For a short time, Portein was known for being the smallest municipality in all of Switzerland. On December 31, 2001, it had only 22 people.

However, by the end of 2003, its population grew slightly to 23 people. This meant it was no longer the very smallest. By 2007, the smallest municipality in Switzerland was Corippo, located in the Canton Ticino.

Language Spoken

Even though Portein is in an area where Romansh is traditionally spoken, almost everyone in the town now speaks German. In 2000, the entire population spoke German.
