Discovering Porto-Vecchio's Past
Porto-Vecchio is sometimes called the city of salt. This is because it was built on salty marshes. These wet areas were drained to help the town grow and develop.
Delicious Corsican Food
Corsica has a rich and varied food culture. Many foods are only available at certain times of the year, like clementines and other citrus fruits.
Clementines: A Corsican Specialty
Corsica is the only part of France that grows this type of orange. About 25,000 tons are produced each year! A large part of this, about 40%, comes from Porto-Vecchio or nearby areas. Clementines are loved for their fresh taste and the many vitamins they provide.
Chestnuts: A Versatile Ingredient
Another very important fruit in Corsica, especially in Porto-Vecchio, is the chestnut. Chestnuts are used in many traditional Corsican dishes. For example, they can be made into bread or crepes.
Pork Dishes: A Local Favorite
Pork is a very popular food in Corsica and is cooked in many different ways. Some famous parts include coppa, lonzu, and prizuttu. Prizuttu is similar to Parma ham. The most famous pork product is figatelli, which is a type of smoked sausage.
Brocciu: A Unique Cheese
The most typical cheese you'll find here is called brocciu. It's a fresh cheese often used in both sweet and savory dishes.
