Prince Carl Philip of Sweden, Duke of Värmland (full name: Carl Philip Edmund Bertil) was born on May 13, 1979. He is the only son of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden. Prince Carl Philip is the second of their three children. He is currently fourth in line to the Swedish throne. His older sister, Crown Princess Victoria, is first in line. After her are his niece Princess Estelle and his nephew Prince Oscar. Prince Carl Philip lives with his wife, Princess Sofia, and their four children in Villa Solbacken in Djurgården, Stockholm.

Early Life and School
Prince Carl Philip was born at Stockholm Palace in Sweden. He was born on May 13, 1979, in the morning. He was baptized in the Royal Chapel a few months later.
When he was born, Carl Philip was the heir apparent to the Swedish throne. This means he was next in line to become king. However, a new law changed this on January 1, 1980. The law made it so the oldest child, no matter if they are a boy or a girl, would inherit the throne. Because of this, his older sister Victoria became the Crown Princess. Prince Carl Philip then became second in line.
He started preschool in 1984. Later, he attended different schools in Sweden, including Smedslättsskolan and Ålstensskolan. He also studied at Enskilda Gymnasiet in Stockholm. In 1994, he went to Kent School and then to Lundsbergs upper secondary school, where he finished in 1999. He later studied graphic design at the Rhode Island School of Design for a year. In 2011, he completed his studies in Agricultural and Rural Management at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.
Prince Carl Philip has dyslexia. This is a learning difference that makes reading and writing harder. His father, King Carl XVI Gustaf, and his sister, Crown Princess Victoria, also have dyslexia.
Hobbies and Interests
Prince Carl Philip loves being outdoors. He was a scout when he was younger. He enjoys many sports, such as football, swimming, sailing, and skiing. In 2003, he finished the "Vasaloppet". This is a very long cross-country ski race in Sweden.
He also has a big passion for car racing. He got this interest from his great-uncle, Prince Bertil. Prince Carl Philip has a special license to compete in races. He has raced in the Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia and the Scandinavian Touring Car Championship.
The prince has also served in the military. He completed his military service in the Amphibious Battalion in 2000. He was a combat boat commander. Over the years, he was promoted to different ranks. In 2014, he became a Major.
Prince Carl Philip is very interested in design and drawing. He started studying graphic design in 2003. In 2012, he started a design company called Bernadotte & Kylberg with Oscar Kylberg. They have designed products for many different brands.
Helping Others and Charity Work
Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia started their own foundation in 2015. They created it to celebrate their wedding. The main goal of their foundation is to help stop bullying.
In 2013, the Prince Carl Philip Racing Cup was created. This racing event helps young people who are good at karting. It gives them a chance to improve and move forward in the sport. The Prince also works with the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences. They visit companies to learn about their creative work.
Prince Carl Philip is a patron for several groups. This means he supports them and helps them with their work. Some of these include The Swedish National Dyslexia Association and The International Union for Conservation of Nature. He also supports The Royal Swedish Motorboat Club.
Family Life
Prince Carl Philip married Sofia Hellqvist on June 13, 2015. Their wedding took place in the Royal Palace chapel in Stockholm. Thousands of people came to watch the celebration. Prince Carl Philip has spoken about how his family welcomed Sofia. He also compared some of the challenges Sofia faced to his own experiences with dyslexia.
The couple moved into Villa Solbacken in 2017 after it was renovated. Before that, they lived in Rosendal Palace.
Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia have four children:
- Prince Alexander Erik Hubertus Bertil, Duke of Södermanland, born on April 19, 2016.
- Prince Gabriel Carl Walther, Duke of Dalarna, born on August 31, 2017.
- Prince Julian Herbert Folke, Duke of Halland, born on March 26, 2021.
- Princess Ines Marie Lilian Silvia, Duchess of Västerbotten, born on February 7, 2025.
All four children were born at Danderyd Hospital.
In October 2019, King Carl XVI Gustaf made a decision about his grandchildren's royal titles. He announced that Prince Alexander and Prince Gabriel would no longer have the title of "Royal Highness." This means they will have more freedom in their future lives. They are still known as princes and dukes of their provinces. They also remain in the line of succession to the throne.
Royal Symbols
Prince Carl Philip has his own coat of arms. It is based on the main coat of arms of Sweden. His coat of arms includes symbols like the Three Crowns of Sweden. It also shows the lion of the House of Bjälbo and the eagle of Värmland. The eagle represents his title as Duke of Värmland. In the middle, there is a smaller shield with the symbol of the House of Bernadotte, his family's royal house. The chain of the Order of the Seraphim surrounds the shield.
