Early Life and Education
Princess Christina was born at Haga Palace near Stockholm, Sweden. She was the fourth child and youngest daughter in her family. When she was younger, she served as a bridesmaid at important royal weddings. For example, she was a bridesmaid at her sister Princess Birgitta's wedding in 1961. She also served at the 1964 wedding of her cousin Princess Anne-Marie of Denmark to King Constantine II of Greece.
She went to school at Franska Skolan in Stockholm. Later, she studied at Radcliffe College in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. She was the only one of her siblings to earn a university degree. She studied art history at Stockholm University.
Public Role
After her grandfather, King Gustaf VI Adolf, passed away in 1973, and before her brother, King Carl XVI Gustaf, got married in 1976, Princess Christina took on an important public role. She was like the 'first lady' of Sweden during that time. Because of this, she continued to have a public role within the royal family even after she got married in 1974. This was different from her older sisters.
Princess Christina was the leader of the Swedish Red Cross for nine years, from 1993 to 2002. She has also been the chairman of the Friendship Society for the Ulriksdal Palace Theatre for many years. This is thanks to her friendship with Kjerstin Dellert.
She has helped write several books. These include stories about her grandmother, Princess Margaret of Connaught, and an ancestor named Josephine of Leuchtenberg.
In January 2023, Princess Christina was featured in a two-part TV show. It was broadcast by Sweden's national public service, Sveriges Television. In the show, she talked a lot about the last three kings of Sweden: her brother, her grandfather, and her great-grandfather.
The princess has also spoken out against the Russian invasion of Ukraine. She has called it unacceptable and said that Russia has committed war crimes.
