Early Life and Education
Princess Christina was born at Haga Palace near Stockholm, Sweden. She was the fourth child and youngest daughter in her family.
When she was younger, she was a bridesmaid at two important royal weddings. In 1961, she was a bridesmaid for her sister, Princess Birgitta. She also served as a bridesmaid in 1964 for her cousin, Princess Anne-Marie of Denmark.
Christina went to Franska Skolan in Stockholm for her schooling. Later, she studied at Radcliffe College in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. She was the only one of her siblings to earn a university degree. She studied art history at Stockholm University.
Public Duties and Roles
Between 1973 and 1976, Princess Christina played a very important role in Sweden. After her grandfather, King Gustaf VI Adolf, passed away in 1973, and before her brother, King Carl XVI Gustaf, married Silvia Sommerlath in 1976, Christina served as Sweden's "first lady." This meant she often represented the country at public events.
Even after she got married in 1974, she continued to have a public role within the royal family. This was different from her older sisters, who took on fewer public duties after their marriages.
Princess Christina was the head of the Swedish Red Cross for nine years, from 1993 to 2002. She has also been the chairman of the Friendship Society for the Ulriksdal Palace Theatre for many years. This is thanks to her friendship with Kjerstin Dellert, who was a famous opera singer.
She has also helped write several books. Some of these books are about her grandmother, Princess Margaret of Connaught, and an ancestor named Josephine of Leuchtenberg.
In January 2023, Princess Christina was featured in a two-part TV show in Sweden. She talked a lot about the "last three kings of Sweden": her brother, her grandfather, and her great-grandfather.
Princess Christina has also spoken out against the Russian invasion of Ukraine. She called it unacceptable and said that Russia was committing war crimes.
