Prince Carl Philip of Sweden, Duke of Värmland (born Carl Philip Edmund Bertil on 13 May 1979) is the only son of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia. He is their second child. As of 2022, Prince Carl Philip is fourth in line to the Swedish throne. His older sister, Crown Princess Victoria, is first in line. After her are his niece Princess Estelle and nephew Prince Oscar. Prince Carl Philip lives in Villa Solbacken in Djurgården, Stockholm. He lives there with his wife, Princess Sofia, and their three sons. Their sons are Prince Alexander, Prince Gabriel, and Prince Julian.

Early Life and Education
Prince Carl Philip was born at Stockholm Palace in Sweden. He was born on 13 May 1979 at 7:20 AM. He was baptized at the Royal Chapel on 31 August 1979. His mother has both German and Brazilian family roots.
Becoming Second in Line to the Throne
For seven months, Carl Philip was the heir apparent to the Swedish throne. This means he was next in line to become king. He held the title of Crown Prince during this time. However, on 1 January 1980, a new law changed how the throne is passed down. The new law made the oldest child, regardless of gender, the next in line. This replaced the old rule where only sons could inherit. Because of this change, his older sister Victoria became the Crown Princess. Prince Carl Philip then became second in line to the throne.
Prince Carl Philip's School Years
From 1984 to 1986, Prince Carl Philip went to preschool. In the fall of 1986, he started elementary school at Smedslättsskolan. He then went to Ålstensskolan for middle school. In the fall of 1992, he began high school at Enskilda Gymnasiet in Stockholm. In 1994, Carl Philip studied at Kent School in the United States. He then continued his studies in science at Lundsbergs upper secondary school. He graduated in the spring of 1999.
Later, he studied graphic design at the Rhode Island School of Design from 2007 to 2008. In 2011, Prince Carl Philip finished his studies in Agricultural and Rural Management. He studied at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Alnarp.
Prince Carl Philip has dyslexia. This is a learning difference that affects reading. His father, King Carl XVI Gustaf, and his sister, Crown Princess Victoria, also have dyslexia.
Hobbies and Military Service
Prince Carl Philip loves being outdoors. He was a scout when he was younger. He enjoys many sports, including football, swimming, sailing, and skiing. In 2003, he completed the "Vasaloppet". This is the world's longest cross-country ski race.
Passion for Car Racing
Carl Philip also loves car racing. He got this interest from his great-uncle, Prince Bertil. Prince Carl Philip has a special license to compete in races. He has raced in the Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia series. Since 2013, he has also competed in the Scandinavian Touring Car Championship.
Military Career
The prince completed his military service in 2000. He served in the Amphibious Battalion. In December 2002, he was promoted to second lieutenant. In 2004, he became a lieutenant in the Swedish Amphibious Corps. He attended the Swedish Defence University in 2007 and 2008. After that, he was made a captain. On 1 October 2014, Prince Carl Philip became a major.
Design and Creative Work
Prince Carl Philip has a strong interest in design and drawing. He began studying graphic design in Stockholm in 2003. In 2012, he started a company called Bernadotte & Kylberg with Oscar Kylberg. This company has designed products for many different brands.
Activities and Charity Work
Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia started a foundation in 2015. They created it to celebrate their marriage. The foundation works to stop bullying.
In 2013, the Prince Carl Philip Racing Cup was created. This racing competition helps young karting drivers improve their skills. The Prince also visits companies with the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences. They focus on how companies use creativity in their work.
Prince Carl Philip supports several organizations. He is a patron (a supporter or sponsor) of groups like The Swedish National Dyslexia Association. He also supports The International Union for Conservation of Nature and The Royal Swedish Motorboat Club.
Personal Life and Family
Prince Carl Philip was in a relationship with Emma Pernald from 1999 to 2009. They decided to end their relationship in March 2009.
In April 2010, the news linked Carl Philip with Sofia Hellqvist. In August 2010, the Royal Court confirmed their relationship. On 27 June 2014, it was announced that Carl Philip and Sofia were engaged to be married.
Royal Wedding and Family Life
They married on 13 June 2015. The wedding took place in Stockholm's Royal Palace chapel. Thousands of people watched the event. Prince Carl Philip spoke out against news stories that suggested Sofia was not welcome in the royal family. He said his family easily accepted her. He compared the unfair treatment of her past to how he was treated for having dyslexia.
The couple moved into Villa Solbacken after it was renovated. Before that, they lived in Rosendal Palace until 2017.
Their Children
On 19 April 2016, Princess Sofia gave birth to their first son. He was named Prince Alexander Erik Hubertus Bertil, Duke of Södermanland. Their second son, Prince Gabriel Carl Walther, Duke of Dalarna, was born on 31 August 2017. Their third son, Prince Julian Herbert Folke, Duke of Halland, was born on 26 March 2021. On 2 September 2024, the couple announced they are expecting their fourth child in February 2025.
On 7 October 2019, King Carl XVI Gustaf made a change. He announced that Prince Alexander and Prince Gabriel would no longer have "royal highness" status. This was done to connect Swedish royalty more closely to the role of the head of state. However, they are still called princes and dukes. They also remain in line to the throne. Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia said this change would give their sons more freedom in their future lives.

Arms
Prince Carl Philip's coat of arms is based on the greater coat of arms of Sweden. It shows the Three Crowns of Sweden in two sections. Another section shows the lion of the House of Bjälbo. The third section has the eagle from the arms of Värmland. This represents his title as Duke of Värmland. In the middle, there is a smaller shield with the family arms of the House of Bernadotte. Around the main shield is the chain of the Order of the Seraphim.
