Ancient History and Trade
The Puntites were an ancient group of people who lived in this region. They were known for trading valuable goods like myrrh, spices, gold, ebony, and frankincense. They traded with ancient Egyptians and people from Mesopotamia using their busy ports.
Even the famous Egyptian Queen Hatshepsut sent a big trip to Punt. This trip is shown in pictures carved on a temple wall in Deir el-Bahari. It happened when King Parahu and Queen Ati ruled Punt.
The Powerful Macrobians
Later, during ancient times, another powerful group called the Macrobians lived in the area. They ruled large parts of what is now Somalia. The Macrobians were famous for living long lives and being very wealthy. People said they were "the tallest and most handsome of all men."
The Macrobians were skilled warriors, herders, and sailors. A Greek historian named Herodotus wrote about them. He said that the Persian Emperor Cambyses II sent gifts to the Macrobian king. Cambyses wanted the Macrobians to join his empire.
However, the Macrobian king, who was chosen for his height and good looks, sent a challenge back. He sent an unstrung bow and said: If the Persians could string the bow, they could invade. But until then, they should be thankful the Macrobians hadn't invaded them!
The Macrobians were a strong power in their region. They were known for their advanced buildings and how much gold they had. They had so much gold that they even used golden chains for their prisoners! Another ancient group, the Harla, built many monuments in the Horn of Africa. They might also be related to the Proto-Somalis.
Busy Trading Cities
After the Macrobian kingdom ended, many rich city-states appeared. These included places like Malao, Mundus, Mosylon, and Opone. These cities were important trading centers. They competed with other powerful groups like the Sabaeans and Axumites for trade.
Somali sailors and merchants were key suppliers of many valuable items. These included gold, silver, gemstones, frankincense, myrrh, acacia gum, salt, livestock, ivory, feathers, hide (skin), and spices. These goods were considered great luxuries in the Greco-Roman world.
Other important proto-Somali city-states were Avalite, Bulhar, Botiala, Essina, Damo, Hannassa, Sarapion, Nikon, Toniki, Gondal, Macajilayn, Salweyn, and Miandi.
