Exploring Grosseto's Location
The Province of Grosseto is located at the very southern end of the Tuscany region. It is the largest province in Tuscany, covering about 4,504 square kilometers (1,739 square miles). It also has one of the lowest populations per square kilometer in all of Italy.
Borders and Neighbors
The province shares its borders with several other areas. To the northwest, it meets the Province of Livorno. To the north, it borders the Province of Pisa. The Province of Siena is to its northeast. Finally, to the southeast, it touches the Province of Viterbo in the Lazio region.
The Tyrrhenian Sea and Islands
To the south of Grosseto is the beautiful Tyrrhenian Sea. This part of the sea includes some southern islands of the Tuscan archipelago. These islands are Isola del Giglio and the smaller Giannutri islands. There are also tiny rock formations called Formiche di Grosseto and Formica di Burano.
National Parks and Nature
A big part of the Arcipelago Toscano National Park is found in both Grosseto and Livorno provinces. This park protects seven main islands: Elba, Isola del Giglio, Capraia, Montecristo, Pianosa, Giannutri, and Gorgona. It also includes smaller islands and rocky areas. The highest point in this park is Mount Capanne, which is 1,019 meters (3,343 feet) tall, located on the island of Elba.
The Colline Metallifere (which means Metalliferous Hills) are along the border with Lazio. These hills contain the Natural Park of Maremma. This park helps protect what is left of the large swampy areas that used to cover this region. Another important protected area is the Diaccia Botrona marshland.
Rivers and Lakes
Grosseto is home to several important rivers. These include the Ombrone, Fiora, Albegna, Pecora, Bruna, Merse, Lente, Farma, and Chiarone.
There are also several lakes, such as Lago dell'Accesa, Lago di Burano, Lago di San Floriano, and Lago Acquato.
Coastal Beauty
The coastline of Grosseto, stretching between the Gulf of Follonica and the mouth of the Chiarone river, is famous for its clear blue waters and thick pine forests. This area has many popular resorts where people go for holidays. Some of these resorts are Marina di Grosseto, Principina a Mare, Castiglione della Pescaia, Punta Ala, Puntone di Scarlino, and Talamone.
Mountains and Hills
The province also has interesting mountains and hills. These include the volcanic cone of Mount Amiata, Bandite di Scarlino (213 meters), Promontorio di Punta Ala e delle Rocchette (350 meters), Monti dell'Uccellina (417 meters), Monte Argentario (635 meters), and Promontorio di Ansedonia (113 meters).
