Pulitzer, Inc. was a large American company that owned many newspapers, television stations, and radio stations. They operated all over the United States. The company was founded in 1947 by Joseph Pulitzer. He was a very famous person who also created the Pulitzer Prizes. It's important to know that the Pulitzer Prizes are special awards for journalism and arts, but they were not directly connected to the Pulitzer, Inc. company itself.
What Was Pulitzer, Inc.?
Pulitzer, Inc. was a major media company. This means they were involved in different ways of sharing news and entertainment. They owned newspapers like the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and the Arizona Daily Star. They also owned TV and radio stations. At one point, they published 14 daily newspapers. They also had 16 daily and 30 non-daily publications from another company called Scripps League.
How Pulitzer, Inc. Grew and Changed
Over the years, Pulitzer, Inc. changed hands a few times. In 2005, the company was sold to Lee Enterprises for about $1.5 billion. Before this, other large media companies were also interested in buying Pulitzer, Inc.
A few years earlier, in 1998, Pulitzer, Inc. sold its TV and radio stations. This part of the company was called the "broadcast group." They sold nine television stations and five radio stations to another company called Hearst-Argyle. This sale meant that Pulitzer, Inc. focused more on its newspaper business.
