Puyang is a city in northeastern Henan province, China. It is located on the northern side of the Yellow River. Puyang borders Anyang to the west and Xinxiang to the southwest. It also shares borders with Shandong and Hebei provinces.
In 2020, the total population of Puyang was about 3.77 million people. The main urban area, which includes Hualong District, Puyang County, and Qingfeng County, had about 2.52 million residents.

Puyang has a warm climate with clear seasons. This is because it is affected by the monsoon winds from Southeast Asia.

Puyang is known as one of the birthplaces of the Chinese nation. It has a rich history and many old cultural sites.
Ancient Discoveries in Puyang
A very old burial site from the Yangshao culture was found here. It shows a picture that people believe is an ancient cosmogram. This picture shows the round Heaven and the square Earth.
The Classic of Poetry, which is the oldest collection of poems in China, has many poems about the countryside of Puyang. Important historical figures from Puyang include Wu Qi, a military leader, Shang Yang, a statesman, and Lü Buwei, a famous thinker.
Puyang During the Three Kingdoms Era
During the Three Kingdoms period (191-196 CE), Puyang was the main base for Cao Cao. It was also the site of the Battle of Yan Province from 194 to 195 CE.
Puyang in Recent History
Puyang was once part of Daming Prefecture. In 1928, it became part of Henan province. Later, in 1949, it was briefly part of a new province called Pingyuan. But by 1953, it was back under the control of Henan province.
The "First Dragon of China"
In 1987, an amazing historical treasure was found in Puyang. It was a series of clams arranged to look like a Chinese dragon. This discovery was very important because it showed that Chinese civilization is more than 6,400 years old. This pushed back the known history of China by over 1,400 years! Because of this, Puyang is now known as "the Hometown of Chinese Dragons".
