The Story of Quinalow
How Quinalow Got Its Name
The Daly brothers started the first butter and cheese factory in the Darling Downs in 1889, right here in Quinalow. They named the area after Bishop James Quinn. He was a Catholic Bishop who helped many Irish people move to Australia. These families were looking for a new home after the Great Famine in Ireland. The "alow" part of the name comes from an Irish word meaning "brook" or "stream."
Quinalow School's Journey
The Quinalow Provisional School first opened its doors on May 6, 1901. The original school building was finished earlier that year. On January 1, 1909, it became the Quinalow State School. By 1965, the school started offering classes for older students too. A preschool was added in 1985.
In August 1979, the very first school building from 1901 was moved to Daly Street. It was used as a preschool for a while. Later, in March 1984, this old school building became the Quinalow Library. It was updated in 2014 to make it even better.
Facing the Floods
Quinalow was affected by big floods in 2010 and 2011. The rising water cut off the town, even surrounding the local pub. Luckily, Myall Creek did not rise as high as it did during the 1981 flood.
