Quinta Brunson (born December 21, 1989) is an American actress, comedian, writer, and producer. She is famous for creating, producing, writing, and starring in the TV show Abbott Elementary. In this show, she plays a second-grade teacher named Janine Teagues. The show airs on ABC.
Brunson first became well-known for her funny videos on Instagram, especially a series called Girl Who Has Never Been on a Nice Date. She later worked for BuzzFeed Video, where she made and acted in many popular videos. She also created two online series for BuzzFeed.
Quinta Brunson has won several important awards for her work. At the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards, she made history. She was the first Black woman to get three nominations in the comedy categories. She won an Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series. She was also nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series (as a producer) and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. At the 75th ceremony, she won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy. This made her the first Black woman to win this award in over 40 years. She also received a Peabody Award in 2022 for Abbott Elementary. Time 100 magazine also named her one of the most influential people in 2022.
Brunson has acted in other TV shows like iZombie, Single Parents, and Miracle Workers. She has also lent her voice to animated shows such as Lazor Wulf and Magical Girl Friendship Squad. She was also part of the first season of the HBO comedy series A Black Lady Sketch Show.

Early life and education
Quinta Brunson grew up in West Philadelphia. Her first name, Quinta, means "fifth" in Spanish. This is because she is the youngest of five children. Her mother, Norma Jean Brunson, was a kindergarten teacher. Quinta was raised as a Jehovah's Witness.
She loved comedy from a young age. While attending the Charter High School for Architecture & Design, she took an improv class. She later went to Temple University and studied at Second City in Chicago during her second year. She decided to leave college early to focus on her comedy career.
Career
2014–2017: Online fame and Buzzfeed
Quinta Brunson first became popular by sharing funny videos on her Instagram in 2014. Her series Girl Who Has Never Been on a Nice Date became very popular. This helped her gain a large online following. After working as a freelancer, she joined BuzzFeed Video as a video producer. Her videos often talked about common problems faced by people in their twenties.
In 2016, Brunson sold two web series that she developed with BuzzFeed Motion Pictures. One was a comedy called Broke for Youtube Red. She wrote, produced, and starred in this show. The second series, Up for Adoption, was made for Verizon's go90 video platform. She also starred in Up for Adoption. In 2017, her acting in Broke was nominated for Best Acting in a Comedy at the Streamy Awards.
2018–present: Abbott Elementary and more
After leaving BuzzFeed in 2018, Brunson acted in a TV pilot for The CW network. The show was called The End of the World as We Know It, but it was not picked up by the network. She also wrote and produced a series called Quinta vs. Everything. This show was available on Facebook Watch from 2017 to 2018. In 2018, it was announced that CBS would develop a comedy pilot with Brunson, Larry Wilmore, and Jermaine Fowler. The show, called Quinta & Jermaine, was about two friends dealing with an unplanned pregnancy. However, this show was also not picked up.
In 2019, she appeared in the supernatural comedy-drama iZombie. She played Dr. Charli Collier and her twin sister, Laila. She also voiced characters in the animated series Lazor Wulf. Later that year, Brunson started co-starring and writing for the HBO sketch comedy series A Black Lady Sketch Show. She left the show after the first season due to other work commitments. In 2020, Brunson also voiced Alex in the Syfy animated series Magical Girl Friendship Squad.
In 2021, Brunson had a recurring role in the third season of Miracle Workers. In June of that year, she released her first book, She Memes Well. It is a collection of essays about her life and career.
Brunson's TV pilot, originally named Harrity Elementary after her old school, was picked up by ABC in May 2021. It was renamed Abbott Elementary. Brunson created, wrote, and co-executive produced the show. She also stars in it alongside Sheryl Lee Ralph, Lisa Ann Walter, Chris Perfetti, Tyler James Williams, and Janelle James. The series first aired on December 7, 2021, and quickly became very popular. Critics loved it, and it has a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. People praised Brunson for bringing a fresh style to network television with Abbott Elementary. The show is named after her real-life former middle school teacher, Ms. Abbott. For the show's first season, Time magazine included her in their 100 Most Influential People of 2022 list. In September 2022, Brunson won an Emmy for Outstanding Writing For a Comedy Series for the show's pilot episode. This made her the first Black woman to win that award by herself. The series also received a Peabody Award in 2023.
In August 2022, Brunson signed a multi-year deal with Warner Bros. Television. This studio helps produce Abbott Elementary.
Brunson also had a guest role on the Party Down revival series. In April 2023, she hosted Saturday Night Live for the first time.
In 2024, Brunson won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for playing Janine Teagues on Abbott Elementary. She is only the second Black actress to win in this category. The first was Isabel Sanford in 1981 for her role on The Jeffersons.
Personal life
Quinta Brunson is married to Kevin Jay Anik. She is also a member of the Writers Guild of America.
