The 81st Golden Globe Awards was a big event that celebrated the best movies and TV shows from 2023. It happened live on January 7, 2024, at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California. The show started at 5:00 p.m. Pacific Time and was shown on CBS and streamed on Paramount+ in the United States.
This was the first time the Golden Globes were fully controlled by Dick Clark Productions and Eldridge Industries. It was also the first time the show aired live on CBS since 1982. The comedian Jo Koy was the host for the evening.
The movies and TV shows that were nominated were announced on December 11, 2023. The film Barbie and the TV series Succession both received the most nominations, with nine each. The movie Oppenheimer followed closely with eight nominations.
This year's awards also introduced two new categories. These were "Cinematic and Box Office Achievement" for popular movies and "Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television." The popular movie pairing "Barbenheimer" (referring to Barbie and Oppenheimer) received a total of seventeen nominations and won seven awards.

About the Ceremony
This Golden Globe Awards ceremony was special because the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), which used to run the awards, was no longer in charge. In June 2023, Dick Clark Productions and Eldridge Industries took over all the rights to the Golden Globes.
The date for the ceremony was announced on February 21, 2023. It returned to its usual Sunday night slot after being on a Tuesday the year before. In September 2023, Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner were named the main producers of the show. Then, in November 2023, CBS announced it would broadcast the ceremony. This was a big change, as NBC had been the main TV partner for the Golden Globes for a long time.
The nominations were announced on December 11, 2023. This event was hosted by Cedric the Entertainer and Wilmer Valderrama. Most of the categories were revealed during a live online show. The remaining ten categories were announced on the TV show CBS Mornings.
On December 21, the comedian and actor Jo Koy was announced as the host. Before this, there were reports that several famous comedians had turned down the hosting job.
A new group of voters, made up of 300 journalists from 76 different countries, chose the nominees and winners this year. This group was much more diverse than the previous one.
Lily Gladstone made history by becoming the first Indigenous actor to win a Golden Globe Award. She won for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama for her role as Mollie Burkhart in Killers of the Flower Moon.
New Categories
On September 26, 2023, two new award categories were added. The "Cinematic and Box Office Achievement" award was for movies that earned at least $100 million in the U.S. and $150 million worldwide. The other new award was "Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television." Some people thought these new categories were added to make the awards more popular and get more viewers.
Awards Not Presented This Year
The two special Lifetime Achievement Awards, the Cecil B. DeMille Award and the Carol Burnett Award, were not given out this year. However, they are expected to return in the future. An executive explained that because the awards had new owners and more nominees in 25 categories, they decided to pause these two special awards for this year.
