Early Life and Education
Reeve Carney grew up in New York City with his brother Zane and sister Paris. His family was full of artists. His dad, John, wrote songs for commercials. His mom, Marti, was a singer, actress, and jewelry designer. His great-uncle, Art Carney, was an Academy Award-winning actor.
Reeve started playing piano when he was very young. He also sang for radio and TV commercials. At age 8, he sang live with Peter, Paul and Mary. Two years later, he sang with a children's choir on Michael Jackson's album, HIStory.
For high school, Carney went to the Academy of Music at Alexander Hamilton High School. He studied music there with his brother Zane and future bandmates. Later, he studied jazz guitar at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music.
Music Career
Carney began playing guitar at age 12. By 15, he was playing guitar professionally in Los Angeles. In 2004, he released his first music, an EP called Looking Glass. He performed with other musicians like Jonny Lang to promote it.
At 22, he signed with Interscope. He formed a rock band called Carney with his brother Zane, Aiden Moore, and Jon Epcar. The band released their first EP, Nothing Without You, in 2008. Their first album, Mr. Green Vol. 1, came out in 2010. The band toured with The Veronicas and opened for Arcade Fire and U2.
While acting on Broadway, Carney also made music. He recorded songs for Broadway's Carols for a Cure in 2011 and 2013. In 2011, he recorded "Rise Above 1" with Bono and The Edge from U2. This song was from the musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark.
Carney also wrote songs for movies like The Tempest (2010) and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 2 (2012). In October 2016, he released his first solo album, Youth Is Wasted. He wrote and produced this album himself. He then went on two tours for his solo music. Three songs from his album won awards at the Independent Music Awards.
Acting Career
Carney first appeared in a film in 1993, called The Saint of Fort Washington. In 1999, he played young Ishmael Chambers in Snow Falling on Cedars. His acting earned him an award for "Best Performance in a Feature Film" in 2000.
After some child acting roles, Carney focused on music. But in 2010, director Julie Taymor chose him for her film The Tempest. She also picked him to play Spider-Man on Broadway. Bono and The Edge, who wrote the music for the show, were very impressed by his singing.
Carney starred as Spider-Man for three years, starting in 2010. His bandmates even played in the orchestra for the show. He left the role in September 2013. In 2012, Carney also played Taylor Swift's love interest in her music video for "I Knew You Were Trouble".
In 2014, Carney was cast as Dorian Gray in the TV series Penny Dreadful. The show ran for three seasons until 2016. While filming Penny Dreadful, he was chosen to play Riff Raff in The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Let's Do the Time Warp Again. This was a TV musical film that premiered in October 2016.
