Early Life and Music Training
Richard Tognetti was born in Canberra, Australia's capital city. He started playing the violin when he was just four years old! He grew up in Wollongong, where he learned violin from great teachers like Harold Brissenden and William Primrose.
When he was 11, Richard went to the Sydney Conservatorium High School. This is a special school for talented young musicians. He continued his studies at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. His teacher, Alice Waten, was a student of famous violinists. While studying, Richard became the leader and soloist of the school's orchestra. In 1980, he won a big competition called the National Youth Concerto Competition.
In 1987, Richard went to Switzerland for more advanced studies. He joined a famous group called the Camerata Bern and played solo concerts. He also led the Basel Sinfonietta orchestra. In 1989, he finished his studies and won an award for being the best graduate performer.
Leading the Australian Chamber Orchestra
When Richard came back to Australia in 1989, he got a very important job. He was chosen to lead the Australian Chamber Orchestra (ACO). Soon after, he became its artistic director. This was amazing because he was only 25 years old! In 2020, he celebrated 30 years of leading the ACO.
Under Richard's leadership, the ACO has become one of the best chamber orchestras in the world. They travel all over Australia, playing concerts in many cities like Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane. They also tour overseas several times a year. The ACO has played in famous concert halls in places like London, New York City, and Vienna.
Many music critics have praised the ACO. For example, The New York Times said their playing was "virtuoso" and "invigorating." The Washington Post even said the orchestra had "the energy and vibe of a rock band." The Guardian in the UK declared, "If there’s a better chamber orchestra in the world today, I haven’t heard it."
Richard Tognetti: Performer, Composer, and Arranger
Richard Tognetti is a very skilled violinist. He can play music from many different time periods, from old Baroque music to modern pieces. Critics often say he is one of the most exciting violinists to hear today.
Richard uses different violins for different types of music. His favorite is a very old and valuable violin made in 1743 by Giuseppe Guarneri. He also plays modern and even electric violins! For example, in 1999, he helped write a piece called "The Ghost of Time" for electric violin and orchestra. He performed it for a worldwide TV broadcast.
Richard has also written music for films and documentaries. He helped create music for the movie Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. He also made films like Musica Surfica, which is about music and his hobby of surfing. Musica Surfica even won an award at the New York Surf Film Festival!
As an arranger, Richard takes music written by other composers and changes it for different groups of instruments. He has arranged many pieces for the ACO. This includes music by famous composers like Franz Schubert, Ludwig van Beethoven, and Maurice Ravel.
Richard often works with other musicians. He has played a lot with Oud player Joseph Tawadros. Their album Concerto of the Greater Sea won an ARIA Award for Best World Music Album. Richard also performs with many other orchestras around the world. He has even conducted an opera!

One special recording was in 2000. Richard and the ACO worked with rock singer Peter Garrett and artist Michael Leunig to record The Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saëns. This recording came with a book of Leunig's drawings.
