Ridgewood is a suburb located just outside the main city of Perth, Western Australia. It's about 37 kilometres north of Perth's city centre. This area is part of the City of Wanneroo, which is a local government area.

Most homes in Ridgewood are single houses. They are built on blocks of land that vary in size, but many are around 500 square metres.

Where is Ridgewood Located?

Ridgewood has clear borders that help you know where it is. To the north, it's next to Butler (along Lukin Drive). To the south, you'll find Clarkson (along Hester Avenue). On the west side, it borders Merriwa (along Connolly Drive). The Mitchell Freeway is on the eastern side, separating Ridgewood from a more rural area called Nowergup.

A Brief History of Ridgewood

The name Ridgewood comes from the idea of a "wooded ridge" or hilly area with trees. This suburb used to be part of Merriwa. But in 1998, Merriwa was split into two parts along Connolly Drive. The eastern part became Ridgewood.

When Ridgewood was first created, only the southern part was populated. This area was known as the "Carnegie Private Estate." It was built in the mid-1990s and had about 968 people living there.

People wanted Ridgewood to be a separate suburb even before 1998. Developers who built the Carnegie Estate asked the City of Wanneroo to make it a new area called "Carnegie." This name was to honour David Carnegie, an early explorer of Western Australia. Even though the name "Carnegie" wasn't chosen for the suburb, the idea of splitting the area from Merriwa was supported. This led to Ridgewood being created four years later.

The northern part of Ridgewood, called "The Vistas," is a newer development. It's part of a larger project called the "Brighton Estate," which also includes parts of the nearby suburbs of Butler and Jindalee.

Who Lives in Ridgewood?

In 2006, about 1,292 people lived in Ridgewood. This number was expected to grow a lot, possibly reaching over 5,900 people by 2016. The people living in Ridgewood are similar to those in Merriwa. For example, the average age of residents is around 33 years old.

Like many areas nearby, most people in Ridgewood identify as Christian. However, there are no churches in the suburb itself. There is a Kingdom Hall for Jehovah's Witnesses. About 27% of residents said they had no religion.

What Can You Find in Ridgewood?

Ridgewood is mainly a place where people live. There's a BP service station in the south-west part of the suburb. You won't find many other shops or big facilities directly in Ridgewood.

However, Ridgewood is very close to Butler, Merriwa, and Clarkson. These nearby suburbs have many shops and services that Ridgewood residents use. For example, the large Ocean Keys Shopping Centre is in Clarkson, which is very convenient.

Ridgewood also has several parks, just like its neighbouring suburbs. Ridgewood Park, in the south-west, is the biggest. It has a sports field and a large pond, which is a great spot for outdoor activities.

The West Coast Language Development Centre is the only school in Ridgewood. It's one of five schools in Western Australia that help children with language learning difficulties.

For younger students, the closest primary school (Kindergarten to Year 6) is Merriwa Primary School. Older students from Ridgewood usually attend Clarkson Community High School.
