A Look Back in Time
Long before European settlers arrived, the Noongar people lived in this area for over 40,000 years. They found plenty of food and water around the many wetlands along the coast. In winter, they would move inland to avoid the cold coastal weather. They returned to the coast in summer when inland water sources dried up.
The Mooro people, led by an elder named Yellagonga, used to travel between Lakes Joondalup, Neerabup, and Yanchep. Their land stretched from the Moore River all the way to what is now the centre of Perth.
In 1865, European settlers started using the old Aboriginal paths as a route for moving livestock. This route went from Dongara to Fremantle, following the west side of the lakes. Lake Neerabup was first recorded by a surveyor named J. Cowle in 1867. The name "Neerabup" comes from a Noongar word that might mean "swampy place" or "small basin."
Part of this old stock route, between Joondalup and Yanchep, is now called the Yaberoo Budjara Heritage Trail. This trail was created in 1988 as part of a bigger network of heritage trails. For many years, especially by postal services, the area was often spelled "Neerabub." The official name "Neerabup" was approved for the suburb in 1982.
Where is Neerabup?
Neerabup is surrounded by a few main roads. To the north, you'll find Wattle Avenue. The planned Mitchell Freeway is to the west, and Pinjar Road is to the east. To the south, it's bordered by Flynn Drive and Burns Beach Road.
What's in Neerabup?
Neerabup is mostly a rural area with lots of farms. You can find several plant nurseries here, which are places that grow and sell plants. There's also a fruit and vegetable shop on Menchetti Road. The beautiful Neerabup Lake wetland is also located along Wanneroo Road.
A large part of the western side of Neerabup, between Wanneroo Road and the future Mitchell Freeway, is the southern half of the Neerabup National Park. This park helps protect the local environment. The area also has a golf course, some small wineries, and a small industrial area on Flynn Drive. You'll also find several sand and limestone quarries, which are places where these materials are dug out of the ground.
Fast Cars and Bikes!
Neerabup is a cool place for motorsport fans! It's home to the Wanneroo Raceway, a track that's about 2.4 kilometers (1.5 miles) long. Wanneroo Raceway opened in 1969 and is the main place for car racing in Western Australia. It even hosts a big annual race called the Supercars Championship.
You can also find the Pinjar Park Speedway in Neerabup, which opened in 2005. Pinjar Park is a 142-metre (155 yd) track for Motorcycle speedway racing. It often hosts national and international races for both senior and junior riders, including those with sidecars. Pinjar Park is considered a smaller speedway in Australia. Most tracks in the country are much longer, usually between 350 metres (380 yd) and 600 metres (660 yd). This speedway replaced older tracks like the Claremont Speedway (which ran from 1927 to 2000) and the Bibra Lake Speedway (which closed in 2004).
