Ripuarian can mean a few different things:

  • It can be another word for riparian, which means something related to a river or living by a river.
  • It was the name of a group of Franks, who were a Germanic people. These Ripuarian Franks lived near the city of Cologne in Germany around the 4th century. They lived along the Rhine river. Around the year 508, King Clovis I made them join the main Frankish tribe.
  • Today, Ripuarian also refers to a group of languages and dialects. More than 100 different Ripuarian dialects exist!

People speak Ripuarian in the same general area where the Ripuarian Franks once lived. This includes parts of the Rhineland in Germany, eastern Belgium, and southern Dutch Limburg. Big cities like Aachen, Bonn (which used to be a capital), Cologne, and Düsseldorf are in this region. Many smaller towns and hundreds of villages also speak Ripuarian.

About 1 million people speak a Ripuarian language. This means about a quarter of the people living in the area use it.

Ripuarian Dialects and Their Names

Ripuarian dialects are usually connected to a specific village or municipality. They are often named after that place. For example:

  • In Cologne, people speak Kölsch.
  • In Bonn, they speak Bönnsch.
  • In Aachen, it's called Öcher Platt.

Almost every place has a slightly different way of speaking Ripuarian. If you listen carefully, people can often tell where someone grew up just by their Ripuarian accent!

How Ripuarian Languages Are Connected

Ripuarian languages are part of the West Middle Continental Germanic language group. This means they are related to other languages like:

Many of the old roots of Ripuarian languages come from Middle High German. But they have also been influenced by many other languages over time. These include Latin, Low German, Dutch, French, and Limburgish.

Some parts of Ripuarian grammar are very special and unique. You won't find them in any other German language.

Official Recognition of Ripuarian

The countries of Belgium and The Netherlands officially recognize some Ripuarian dialects as minority languages. This means they are seen as important languages that need protection. The European Union also supports this recognition.
