The river tyrannulet (Serpophaga hypoleuca) is a small bird that belongs to the tyrant flycatcher family, called Tyrannidae. These birds are known for catching insects while flying. You can find river tyrannulets in countries like Peru, Venezuela, and Brazil. They also live along rivers that stretch into Ecuador, Colombia, and Bolivia.

River tyrannulets make their homes in warm, wet shrubland areas. These areas are usually found right next to rivers, which act like special paths or "corridors" for the birds.

About the River Tyrannulet

The river tyrannulet is a unique bird. It was first described by scientists Philip Sclater and Osbert Salvin in 1866. This bird is part of the Serpophaga group, which includes other small flycatchers.

Where River Tyrannulets Live

River tyrannulets are mostly found near rivers in two big areas: the Amazon Basin and the Orinoco River area. They prefer to live along these river paths. These paths are usually about 100 to 150 kilometers wide.

Rivers in the Amazon Basin

In the Amazon Basin, you can find these birds along several major rivers. These include the Amazon River itself, and its large branches. Some of these branches are the Tocantins River, Araguaia River, Xingu River, Madeira River, and the Marañón River and Ucayali River in Peru.

The birds follow the Araguaia River downstream until it joins the Tocantins River. From there, they continue along the Tocantins River. On the Madeira River, their home stretches into Bolivia for about 300 kilometers. They also live near a part of the Branco River, which flows into the Rio Negro.

Rivers in Venezuela

In Venezuela, river tyrannulets live along the lower part of the Orinoco River. They also live along the Arauca River, which is on the border between Colombia and Venezuela. This river path is about 700 kilometers long.
