Coaching Career Highlights
Starting as an Assistant Coach (1992–2008)
Ron English began his coaching journey as an assistant. He worked at several universities. These included Mt. San Antonio College, Northern Arizona University, and San Diego State University. He also coached at Arizona State University.
From 2003 to 2005, he coached the defensive secondary at the University of Michigan. The defensive secondary includes players like safeties and cornerbacks. In 2006, he became the defensive coordinator for Michigan. This means he was in charge of the entire defense.
His defense was very successful in 2006. They were especially good at stopping teams that ran the ball a lot. They allowed the fewest rushing yards per game in the whole country. After the 2007 season, he moved to the University of Louisville. There, he became their defensive coordinator.
Leading the Eastern Michigan Eagles (2009–2013)
In December 2008, English became the head coach at Eastern Michigan University. He was one of only a few African American head coaches in top college football at that time.
His first season in 2009 was tough, with the team losing all 12 games. In 2010, the team improved slightly, winning 2 out of 12 games.
The 2011 season was the best for the Eagles in 17 years. They finished with 6 wins and 6 losses. Even though they had 6 wins, they couldn't play in a bowl game. This was because two of their wins were against teams from a lower division. After this successful season, English was named the Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year.
Some people thought he might become a head coach at bigger schools. However, he stayed with Eastern Michigan for the 2012 season. The team finished 2–10 that year.
English was fired on November 8, 2013. This happened just before a game. School officials found out he had used very inappropriate language during a team meeting. He later apologized for losing his temper.
Coaching After Eastern Michigan (2014–Present)
In 2014, English took part in an internship program with the Cleveland Browns in the NFL. He also spent more time with his family.
He returned to college coaching in 2016. He became the defensive coordinator at San Jose State. In 2017, he joined Dan Mullen's staff at Mississippi State as a safeties coach.
He then coached safeties for the Florida Gators from 2018 to 2020. From 2021 to 2022, he was co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach at Purdue. Since 2023, he has been back at Louisville as co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach.
